Pitcher of the Year: Brandon Dufault, rhp, Nashua (Northeastern)

The Worcester Bravehearts made the championship final for the Futures League for the second year in a row. However, for the first time in league history, there were co-champions declared between Worcester and the regular season champion Martha’s Vineyard Sharks.

The league MVP was Michael Dellicari (SUNY-Oswego) who is one of the top players at the Division III level, as Dellicari led the league in both home runs and RBI while ranking in the top 5 in batting average. Brandon Dufault (Northeastern) was named the Pitcher of the Year after he started eight games to the tune of a miniscule 1.30 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings pitched.

The top professional prospect in the league is righthanded pitcher Chance Huff, making it two consecutive years that a Vanderbilt incoming freshman has topped the list. Huff looks the part of a prototypical frontline starter with his 6-foot-4 frame and low effort 90-94 mph fastball. Sal Frelick, an incoming freshman at Boston College, was the top position prospect as the smooth, lefthanded swinging middle infielder should be able to make an immediate impact in Chestnut Hill.

Top 5 Prospect Reports

1. Chance Huff, rhp, Martha’s Vineyard (Vanderbilt/FR in 2019)
Vanderbilt’s freshmen classes have been top notch over the years and the 2018 class is off to a good start as for the second year in a row an incoming Commodore is the top prospect in the Futures League. Huff certainly has the makings of a frontline prospect with an ideal, athletic 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame and the stuff to back that up as well. With a fastball that sits in the 92-94 mph range, Huff can also work in his secondary pitches with effectiveness. Huff was excellent over a 13-appearance stretch during the summer with a 1.15 ERA and 25 strikeouts in a little over 23 innings and has the upside and profile of a high draft selection when he’s eligible.
