The Prospect League has seen some tumultuous activity within its metaphorical parameters in recent years, with teams seemingly folding and unfolding at whim, and the League celebrated its 10th season in 2018 with 11 teams. The Kokomo Jackrabbits took home the regular season crown with a record of 37-22, good for a .627 winning percentage, but it was the Terre Haute REX who captured the League Championship, defeating those same Kokomo Jackrabbits in the final series.

Springfield’s Richard Miller (Towson) took home the Player of the Year award, and, quite frankly, did so running away. He hit .373 with 18 doubles, six triples, and a staggering 17 home runs en route to winning the award. And while we gave the nod to Ohio State’s Dillon Dingler as the top professional prospect in the league, Miller split that very same billing with Dingler, as voted on by the league itself.

The Prospect League doesn’t seem to name a Pitcher of the Year in 2018, an honor that that likely would have gone to Kokomo’s Chandler Coates if it existed. Coates is a junior at Arkansas State following a transfer from perennial powerhouse JC Howard College in West Texas, and he was named a First Team Summer Collegiate All-American by Perfect Game after a dominant summer. Coates went 8-1 for the Jackrabbits with a league-leading (among qualifiers) 1.79 ERA as well as 50 strikeouts (over 8 per 9 innings) against only 17 walks (under 3 per 9 innings).

The League does, however, give out a Fireman of the Year award, presented each season to the league’s best reliever, as voted upon by the league. This year’s recipient was Chillicothe’s Jack Raines (Baldwin Wallace), who worked 27 innings out of the Paints’ bullpen to the tune of a cool 1.00 ERA, picking up 35 strikeouts and nine saves along the way.

Top 5 Prospect Reports

1. Dillon Dingler, c/of, Chillicothe (Ohio State/SO in 2019)
Dingler’s first season in Columbus went quite well, as the true freshman played in 53 games, earning 44 starts, the majority of which came in the outfield. Dingler slashed .244/.332/.369, a respectable slash line for a freshman’s first season in Power 5 baseball, and Dingler’s summer was even more encouraging. With the Chillicothe Paints, Dingler slashed .374/.458/.550 with more walks than strikeouts and valuable innings behind the plate, most especially. Dingler is expected to take over the starting catcher job at OSU in 2019, after playing mostly outfield as a freshman, and the reports out of the Prospect League were that his athleticism, arm strength and overall feel for the game were making the permanent positional transition even easier than expected to go along with his obviously prodigious offensive upside.
