Showdowns, World Series up next

Nate Schweers

As the summer at Lakepoint begins to wind down, seven events will round out what has been an exciting two months off baseball in Georgia.

2018 PG Summer Showdown (15u/17u)

The 15u and 17u age groups of the 2018 PG Summer Showdown get underway in Northwest Atlanta on Friday July 20. Both age groups of the tournament will run from July 20-24, with a championship game at LakePoint to finish off a single elimination playoff bracket.

In the 15u division, 58 teams will battle for one of 15 spots in the single elimination bracket. While last year’s champion, Ninth Inning Royals Bohana, isn’t returning in the 15u age group, a pair of Ninth Inning Royals team will be part of the field of 58.

Kenneth Mallory Jr. is the highest-ranked player (91 overall) from the 2021 class expected to be in attendance. Other ranked players include David White, Will Cook, Christopher Ho, Matthew Buchanan, Travis Smith and Dane Hall.

Other past champions of this event include the 6-4-3 DP Cougars Montgomery (2014), West Hills Show (2015) and the Georgia Bombers 15u White (2016).

In the 17u age division, 72 teams will be battling in eight pools of four. The 643 DP Cougars have won the previous three editions of the event and will be looking to make it four in a row this year.

2018 PG World Series (14u, 15u, 16u)

The Perfect Game World Series will come to Lakepoint from July 20-26. The three age divisions will battle in what has become one of Perfect Game’s premier events of the summer.

The three age divisions will be spread out over the course of the seven days, with the three different start and end dates: 14u July 20-24; 15u July 21-25; 16u July 22-26. With less than 35 teams in each age division, this event promises to bring exciting games to all in attendance.

The 2021 class will be well represented at the 15u event with 14 of the top 30 players attending. For the 16u age group, Banditos Scout Team 16u will have top 10 players in Victor Mederos and Jared Kelley.

It will be interesting to follow the loaded roster of the Dulins Dodgers Prime 15u during that portion of the event, as they were the winners of the 14u division in 2017. With Blaze Jordan and Nick Bitsko leading the way, the sky is the limit for this bunch. Team Elite was the winner of the 15u division last year, and they will look to defend their title in the 16u as well.

2018 PG Summer Showdown (16u, 18u)

The 16u and 18u age groups of the 2018 PG Summer Showdown get underway in northwest Atlanta on Wednesday July 25. Both age groups of the tournament will run from July 25-29, with a championship game at LakePoint to finish off a single elimination playoff bracket.

In the 16u division, 18 of the 70 teams will make a single elimination bracket play with a championship game at LakePoint on July 29. In the 18u division, 10 of the 40 teams will make the same style playoff bracket.

This event wraps up a summer full of baseball action in Northwest Atlanta and it is sure to provide fireworks. Last year’s champions of the event were Rawlings Southeast 17u National (18u) and the Georgia Bombers (16u).
