Elmira set to host PGCBL ASG

Elmira, New York is a haven for those who appreciate the crack of a wooden bat and the chatter of players across the diamond. Each summer, the town of about 30,000 people welcomes in baseball players from all across the country who come to play in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League for the Pioneers, Elmira’s team.



The pureness of the scene that unfolds during every Pioneer home game almost takes you back in time; it seems like a movie scene playing out in front of you. Renovations have happened over the years to keep the park in operation, but the old-time feel remains at one of the hidden gems in upstate New York. Last year, more than 73,000 fans came through the gates at Dunn Field. That was the fourth-highest attendance number in all of summer baseball, not just the PGCBL. The stadium was built in 1939 and since then has seen everything from wrestling and boxing matches to a Beach Boys concert in 1984.

There’s a love affair between this team, this league, and this town. That is why it is the perfect place to host the 2018 PGCBL All-Star Game, presented by the Hilliard Corporation and Southern Tier Custom Fabricators, which will be played on July 18.

Elmira averages over 2,000 fans per home game during the regular season. Do a little quick math on that: a town of 30,000 has 2,000 fans at every home game. That is roughly seven percent of the population. At every game.

"We’ve been in the top five in attendance for five years now," Elmira head coach Matt Burch said before the season, according to the Star Gazette. "The expectation is that there’s a winning product. People pay to come through the turnstile and they pay their money for concessions. There’s an expectation that we do win.”

The New York Mets get about 31,000 fans per home game in a city, Queens, that has about 2.3 million people. That’s a little over one percent of the population at home games. Sure, Mets games are more expensive and it might not be an apples-to-apples comparison. But if the argument against comparing the two is, “Yeah, well, Pioneers games are a lot less expensive, that’s why the attendance is better,” then, well, great. PGCBL games are affordable, which is part of the pureness of the whole thing. Fans can go get an up-close-and-personal experience all while watching future professional baseball players compete in a laid back atmosphere.

All of that is enhanced when Elmira hosts a PGCBL All-Star Game. The last time the town hosted, in 2014, over 4,000 fans attended. Twice the All-Star game has been in Elmira, in fact, and it has brought in the top two attendance marks in the seven-year history of the PGCBL All-Star Game. This year, as one would imagine, is expected to be a sellout.

"They're awesome," Elmira catcher Tanner Johnson said about his team’s fans, according to the Star Gazette. "I'm sure it will be pretty much like a normal game because we always have 2,500 to 3,000 people, so I'm kind of hoping it will be the same thing. We'll see."

The All-Star Game will be preceded by a home run derby, of course, which will have Elmira infielder Jordan Westburg participating. Westburg is fresh off a College World Series appearance with Mississippi State, where he drove in seven runs against North Carolina, tying a CWS record. He hasn’t stopped hitting since he got to Elmira, knocking 15 hits in 31 at-bats through nine games.

The home crowd will also be happy to see four of their own make the West roster, as Elmira will be represented by third baseman Joey Myers (UC Davis), utility man Johnson (Kentucky), and pitchers Mason Hazelwood (Kentucky) and Rhyse Dee (Wake Forest).

Those four, along with the rest of the All-Stars, will start the day by running through drills in front of scouts for all 30 Major League teams.

"The contemporary path to scouting events is the showcase events," Burch said, according to the Star Gazette. "There's no adrenaline at those things and there's no competitive spirit, necessarily. It's for the numbers only. But at the All-Star game here in our league and in other leagues like ours, it gives those kids an opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive environment. That's really what the scouts want to see."
