Final Four set for 13u Super25

Photo: Ryan Mullock (Perfect Game)

SANFORD, Fla. – The field for the 13u Super25 National Championships could stand up as the most competitive of any age group this summer with 16 states represented and one from the Dominican Republic making up the 36 teams. Upon pool play action being completed on Monday, eight teams marched on to the quarterfinals and all four games featured wild action that left four worthy semifinalists standing above the rest.

The first semifinalist made it look the easiest of anyone as FTB Resmondo only needed 4 ½ innings to defeat Kangaroo Court Roos National 8-0 to remain unbeaten heading into Tuesday’s final day of play.

FTB was immediately staked to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Jayce Blalock (2022, Grantville, Ga.) came to the plate with two on and two out and blasted his second home run of the tournament to give starter Michael Castro (2023, West Palm Beach, Fla.) a lead to work with. Castro was stingy against a Roos offense that had entered the game scoring 45 runs in their five pool play matchups as he cruised through five innings while allowing four hits and striking out three.

Blalock added an RBI triple in the third inning to give him four RBI for the game and Manuel Beltre (2022, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. FTB will be a tough offense to hold off on Tuesday in the semifinals.

FTB will take on the Bell Ringers at 9:00 a.m., a team that had to go into extra innings to earn their spot in the Final Four after going seven innings with Cincinnati Fury Elite knotted up at one.

Fury starter Dakota Secrest (2023, Lucasville, Ohio), and opponent Colin Simmons (2022, Glen Mills, Pa.), each allowed a run in the third inning, but were both outstanding. Secrest allowed only two hits through seven innings while Simmons was one better allowing just one.

Extra innings created a situation that gave each team a shot at breaking through with the bases loaded and one out and it was the Bell Ringers who had the first crack at jumping out in front.

With Secrest still on the mound for the Fury, Mike Anderson (2022, Haverton, Pa.) stepped to the plate, and on a check swing, he dropped in a single into right-center field to knock home two runs to put the Ringers ahead 3-1. It did not stay that way long as Justin Stupka (2023, New Cumberland, Pa.) lined an RBI single to center to make it a 4-1 lead. That hit knocked Secrest out of the game as the righthander finished with eight strikeouts for the game.

Simmons also started the bottom of the eighth inning on the mound with his pitch count low enough, and despite walking in a run with two outs, he was able to seal the victory with a pop out in foul territory to third. He finished with four strikeouts and threw 96 pitches to earn a well-deserved victory to send his team to the semifinals.

On the opposite side of the bracket, the Motor City Hit Dogs received a fine effort from Chase Goddard (2023, Ball Ground, Ga.) and Nolan Schubart (2023, Durand, Mich.) on the mound as the duo combined to strike out 13 hitters and allow just three hits to help defeat NOCA Select 4-2 to move on to the semifinals.

The Hit Dogs entered the quarterfinals as one of four teams without a loss and jumped ahead of the Select in the second inning as Schubart lined a triple to right and came in to score on a Sebastian Jaimes (2023, Lincoln Park, Mich.) RBI double to right.

In the third, the Hit Dogs went ahead 3-0 on a Blake Grimmer (2023, Spring Lake, Mich.) two-run single to right field.

Goddard started on the hill for the Hit Dogs and was removed after getting one out in the fourth before Schubart entered with the bases loaded. With two outs, Ryan Porche (2022, River Ridge, La.) launched a long fly to center that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double to draw the Select to within a run at 3-2 before Schubart escaped further damage to hold the Hit Dog lead.

The Hit Dogs tacked on a run in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan Mooney (2023, Rochester Hills, Mich.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third and came home on Goddard’s sacrifice fly to center as they gave Schubart a two-run advantage that he would not relinquish.

After Goddard struck out seven in his 3 2/3 innings of work, Schubart struck out six and allowed only one hit in his 3 1/3 innings to close out the Select and advance the Hit Dogs to Tuesday’s semifinals.

The Hit Dogs will play Mid Atlantic Show-Rucci, who had to contend with the previously unbeaten Scorpions North-Nugent in a battle of the top two teams from Pool C. The Show got the better of the teams’ second meeting with a convincing 9-2 victory.

Several standouts made impacts for the Show in the victory, but it started with a strong pitching performance from Ryan Mullock (2022, Moorestown, N.J.) who worked into the sixth inning and also contributed a pair of doubles and an RBI at the plate.

Mullock got the scoring started for the Show in the second inning with his first double of the game, a liner into the right-center field gap. He would score on a groundout to short as they forged ahead 2-0.

In the third, the Show tacked on two more runs as Xavier Massey (2022, Audubon, N.J.) lined a one-out triple into left-center and scored on a single to right from Nathan Taylor (2024, Mickleton, N.J.). After Taylor swiped second with two outs, Winston Yates (2023, Moorestown, N.J.) drove him home on a single to left to make it a 4-0 Show lead.

The Scorpions drew a run closer in the fourth as Zachary Zorbo (2023, Guyton, Ga.) doubled to left to make it a 4-1 game. However, in the fifth Yates drove in a pair with a double to right, and in the sixth, Isaiah Pinkney (2022, Clayton, N.J.) put the game out of reach with a two-run homer to left as the Show would see the game out to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals.

The morning semifinal matchups will take place at 9:00 a.m., with the winners meeting in the championship game, taking place at 11:15 a.m. at the Boombah Sports Complex.

Nolan Ash (2028, Ashland, Mo.) showed off the power upside for Natty State 2028. The right-handed hitter starts from a spread stance with in-line feet and a high handset with a high back elbow, utilizes a leg lift stride. Creates separation and uses a direct hand path with a slightly uphill bat plane and some feel to generate lift from the lower half. Quick hands and stays in-sync with a rotational lower half and solid bat speed. Showed the power belting a solo bomb over the left field fence. Long and lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with wiry strength present and more room to fill. The shortstop has a high ceiling and feel for the barrel. Colton Dodds (2028, Columbia, Mo.) showed off the barrel feel and power upside for Natty State 2028. Coppy's Corner: July 7 Summer Edition

John Coppolella

It’s an exciting time for College Baseball. Not only do potential and proposed changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) elevate the game, but we are coming off a thrilling College World Series and less than a week away from Major League Baseball’s 2026 Amateur Draft. In the middle of it all is the Cape Cod Baseball League.  The amateur players on the Cape are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th  through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and...

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff

Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

West Region Rankings Risers: Class of 2028

Joey Cohen
Article Image
After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. Improvements in strength, athleticism, and overall skill were evident across the board giving our staff real conviction when it came time to shuffle the board. With that in mind, I wanted to highlight a handful of west region prospects who made a strong impression on me this summer and earned a well-deserved jump in...
