Ninth Inning Royals Complete Comeback

EMERSON, Ga. – The Ninth Inning Royals – Radcliff completed an exciting comeback to win the championship of the 2018 15u PG Super25 Georgia Qualifier 4-2 over the Ozone Warriors.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the top of the seventh inning, the Ninth Inning Royals needed a spark. Following a leadoff single from Wyatt Hodges, Agyei Quinichett was able to deliver a run-scoring double down the left field line to tie the score at two.

After a walk, Davis LeDoyen came to the plate looking to deliver the biggest at-bat of the game. LeDoyen crushed a ball deep down the right field line, plating two, and putting the Ninth Inning Royals ahead for good.

“I popped up my first two at-bat, so I was just thinking wait back on it,” said LeDoyen. “He threw me a fastball and I just found a way to turn on it. I’m just glad to help the team out.”

The Royals were able to overcome defensive lapses throughout the game, and were able to make the big plays in the bottom of the seventh to secure a championship victory.

“We got up at five o’clock this morning, we knew had to play three games, and the kids stayed up the whole game,” said head coach Vic Radcliff. “We had four errors, but they didn't give up. I went out in the seventh and told the guys that it was the championship. Our pitcher was out here busting his butt, and we needed to make the plays to win the championship.”

Davis LeDoyen’s game-winning triple was enough to earn him MVP of this year’s tournament. Before today’s game, LeDoyen was batting .529, and had eight RBI on the week.

The MV-Pitcher of this year’s tournament was Derek Vaughn of the Ozone Warriors. Vaughn struck out five batters in six shutout innings this week, and had a WHIP of just 0.67.

DRB Elite Gets over the Hump

EMERSON, Ga. – After a runner-up finish in the 16u PG/EC Invitational, and a third place finish in the 17u PG/EC Invitational, DRB Elite Sapp got over the hump Monday. DRB Elite cruised to a 10-1 win over the Ninth Inning Royals Honeycutt 16u, taking home the championship at the 2018 16u PG Super 25 Georgia Qualifier.

DRB Elite took control from the opening bell on Monday, putting across one run in the first inning and two in the second. Tournament MVP Reuben Church opened the scoring with a laced run-scoring double to left field. Church, who is uncommitted member of the 2020 class, was 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of doubles.

In the second inning, DRB Elite pushed across their second run on a double to the gap from Cameron Fisher (Mississippi), and was able to tack on another just two batters after second baseman Josh Davis roped a single into left field.

DRB Elite Sapp has struggled to finish tournaments so far this summer, but head coach Dwayne Sapp was proud of his team’s focus and desire to get it done during today’s championship.

“You’re tired and you’re exhausted when you play all these games in the heat, but I told my guys today ‘hey lets finish this thing’,” said Sapp. “We didn't finish the first one, and then we ran out of pitching in the 17u, but I’m real proud of the guys today.”

On a team with some of the most concentrated talent at the 16u age, DRB Elite believes this is just the beginning of what should be a great summer for them down at LakePoint.

“The kids will be excited for those tournament [WWBA National Championships], and the two tournaments are back to back weeks so hopefully we can compete and play well, keep doing what we’re doing, stay healthy, and I think we will be a tough out.”

While the bats were on fire during Monday’s game, Brandt Pancer was equally as dominant on the mound, tossing six strong innings in a winning effort. Pancer, who is currently ranked as the 33rd-best player in the state of Georgia for the 2020 class, allowed just one run and struck out six strikeouts.

“I didn't have my best stuff today, but I felt like I had a great defense behind me,” said Pancer. “I tried to throw as many strikes as I could and let the defense do the work.”

Pancer was able to minimize seven hits from the Ninth Inning Royals, and did an excellent job of making big pitches when he needed to over the course of his outing.

“I just do my best to keep them [runners] where they are and try to limit runs because that is the ultimate goal of the game as a pitcher.”

The DRB Elite bats scored in all but one inning on Monday, highlighted by a three-run fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Travis Hamrick, who is committed to playing his college baseball at North Carolina, went 4-for-4 today, and Hudson Sapp (Mississippi) added two RBI out of the leadoff spot.

“I think today we actually played like we wanted to be here,” said Reuben Church. “We kind of slept walk the past two weeks and got tired. I think today we wanted to prove that we can win fairly easily when we show up ready to play.”

DRB Elite also had the tournament’s MV-Pitcher in Hank Bearden. Bearden, who is committed to Georgia, struck out 12 batters in six innings of work this week. Bearden is currently ranked as the 55th-best player in the class of 2020, and features a fastball that has been up to 91 from the right side in events past.
