EMERSON, Ga. - The 14u PG Spring Kick Off ended on Sunday evening as the 643 DP Cougars downed Elite Squad 2022 in a highly contested final that ended 4-2. Both teams looked dominant throughout the weekend and provided an excellent championship game that really showcased the strengths of both teams.

Elite Squad had their ace on the mound in the final game as righthanded pitcher Blaydon Plain toed the rubber in the championship game. Plain features a fastball into the mid-80s, very advanced velocity for the age. Dawson Campbell started on the bump for 643 and the two starters went toe-to-toe against each other early on in the game.

The scoring got started right away as Andrew Bermudez laced a double to bring in a run and give Elite Squad an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars struck back in the bottom half, however, as after a leadoff double off the bat of Taylor Shultz, Zachary Rozsman drove him in to tie the game. Elite Squad would add another run to take a 2-1 lead after a fielder’s choice and the score would stay that way for some time. Plain settled into a groove and worked through a couple more scoreless innings.

The at-bat of the game came in the sixth inning. Trent Ringer, with the runners on second and third, laced a triple to bring in two runs and take the lead. Ringer himself would come around to score after a sacrifice got him across.

Champ Davis was the star of the game for the Cougars, as the righthander relieved Campbell in the fourth inning and turned in 3.1 innings of shutout baseball. He earned himself the victory on the mound and helped the Cougars secure the championship for the 14u PG Spring Kick Off.

Elite Squad’s pitcher Tyler Venegas was named the MV-Pitcher for the event. Venegas started one game but turned in a seven-inning, complete game shutout that saw him strike out nine batters. Andruw Jones was named MVP for the 643 DP Cougars as he batted .600, including two triples, and drove in seven runs batting in the three-hole.
