Junior College Highlights

As a part of this new feature, we’ll also be adding significantly to our already unparalleled Junior College coverage, which will eventually include the Top 150 Junior College prospects list as well as a weekly Top 25 Junior College teams once the season gets going in the early part of next year. For the first iteration of Off the Board: Junior College, we’ll be taking a look at the Top 10 recruiting classes for the class of 2018, and analyzing how those classes will be augmented by Junior College prospects. Over the next several weeks we’ll begin to add commitment breakdowns to this section, as well as further looks at recruiting classes, and eventually transfer breakdowns. 

A look at the current junior college additions to the Perfect Game top 2018 recruiting classes:

1. Vanderbilt

With the top overall class in the country right now, a potentially legendary recruiting class depending on who all makes it to campus, Vanderbilt hasn't yet taken any junior college commitments in the class of 2018. 

2. Mississippi State

Mississippi State is always prevalent on the junior college recruiting trail, and 2018 is no exception, as they've secured 6 commitments in the class to go along with their tremendous high school crop.

Gunnar Halter, ss/rhp, Seminole State (Okla.).
• Legitimate two way player with MLB bloodlines
• Very good athleticism with middle infield defensive tools and arm strength, also projects well with the bat
• A legitimate pro prospect on the mound, has been up to 95 mph with a potentially plus breaking ball

Keaton Winn, rhp, Iowa Western
• A classic projection righty, Winn looks the part and stands to pack on even more muscle to his lean frame
• Has legitimate arm strength right now, reaching into the low-90's with his fastball, and should throw harder in time
• Has feel for three pitches, giving him a starter's arsenal, and does a good job of commanding all three.

JP Elkins, rhp/ss, Hinds CC (Miss.)
• An instate JuCo add, Elkin attends Hinds CC in Raymond, Mississippi, a mere 140 miles from Starkville.
• A very athletic prospect with two way potential, Elkins may well be the wildcard in this class
• The main calling card to his profile here is his arm speed, which the MSU coaches see as having big time velocity potential on the mound

Colby White, rhp, Pearl River CC (Miss.)
• A pure power-armed reliever, White is the first of the MSU JC commits to profile exclusively as a bullpen arm
• Has been very successful at the JC level thus far, with a very good freshman campaign at Pearl River
• Consistently gets up to 95 mph with his fastball, and should fit right into the MSU bullpen upon arriving on campus

Tucker Childers, c/1b, Northeast Mississippi CC
• A prolific hitter, Childers is the only MSU JC commitment who is a hitter-only prospect, while the aforementioned Halter and Elkins have two-way potential
• Childers' calling card is his lefthanded power, which is always a sought-after commodity in recruiting 
• He's primarily a catcher at this point, but could play both 1st base and DH as well, simply for the sake of getting his bat into the lineup as much as possible

Jack Eagan, lhp, Madison College (Wisc.)
• Perhaps the most polished of this crop, Eagan has advanced pitchability and lots of starter traits
• Works comfortably in the upper-80's/low-90's with his fastball, throwing lots of strikes with it
• Has a clean arm action and delivery to go along with quality stuff, and should challenge for a rotation spot immediately.

3. Louisiana State

Always a big purveyor of junior college prospects, LSU has been a bit more quiet in the 2018 cycle thus far, taking only one JC commitment at this point. 

Aaron George, rhp, San Jacinto (Texas)
• A Louisiana native, elected to head back home and play for LSU once he finishes up his JC career with perennial powerhouse San Jac. 
• Very physical with projection remaining on frame, looks the part of the classic SEC power-armed righthander.
• Works into low-90's at present with steep plane and solid slider, physicality and arm speed portend to additional velocity in the future. 

4. Florida

Florida, like LSU, has elected thus far to just take one JC commitment. However, again like LSU listed above, they'll be on the lookout for any late pop up JC's in the spring to potentially add to their class. 

Santino Miozzi, c, Florida Southwestern
• A physical, large-framed backstop, Miozzi has the strength necessary to stand up to a full load of innings behind the plate. 
• Sought after for his defensive acumen, has a very good collection of defensive tools that will allow him to contribute right away behind the plate. 
• Has strength in swing as well, should be able to contribute with some power at the plate eventually. 

5. Florida International

A year after landing the No. 1 overall class in the country (though several of those prospects didn't make it to campus at FIU), Florida International is back at it again, recruiting at an extremely high level, including 3 junior college prospects. 

Edmond Americaan, of, Chipola College
• One of the better bats in JC baseball heading into the '18 season, has legitimate MLB Draft potential in this class
• Coming off of a National Championship season with Chipola where he hit .364 and played on a team that had 11 players drafted off of it. 
• A good athlete as well, has the potential to play all three outfield spots depending on need.

Max Guzman, c/1b, Chipola College
• Former Perfect Game All-American, was committed to FIU at one point in high school but elected to go to Chipola for his first two seasons. 
• Calling card is his righthanded raw power, which is prodigious and is likely amongst the best in the class
• Has some defensive potential behind the plate but best positions moving forward are likely 1st base/designated hitter. 

Luis Chavez, c, ASA Miami
• An athletic catch-and-throw prospect, viewed as one of the better defensive catchers in the junior college ranks at present. 
• Not a big HR threat yet, but does a good job working gap to gap and making consistently hard contact with the bat. 
• Got some playing time at Miami-Dade as a freshman, expected to be a full time starter at ASA Miami this year. 

6. Louisville

Traditionally, Louisville doesn't hit the JC market very hard when filling out their recruiting classes, but always seems to take 1-2 JC prospects per year who the coaching staff feels strongly about. 

Luke Smith, rhp, Parkland (Ill.)
• Good present size with projection remaining, has more upside than traditional 2nd year college players
• Very successful freshman season at Parkland, going 10-0 with a 2.37 ERA.
• Works in the 87-91 mph range with a quality slider, could have potential as both a starter or a reliever. 

7. Texas A&M

The Aggies, like others on this list, have elected to not take a junior college commitment as of yet. Though, considering just how loaded junior college baseball in the state of Texas is, they'll certainly be keeping watch into the spring. 

8. Tennessee

In Coach Tony Vitello's first full recruiting cycle as the head man for the Volunteers, Tennessee has compiled an impressive class of both prep and JC prospects. 

Denny Bentley, lhp, Howard College (Texas)
• One of the top pitchability prospects in the country, with command of a four pitch mix. 
• Has quality stuff as well, working up to 90 mph with his fastball and complimenting it with good offspeed stuff
•A New Jersey native, in line to be one of Howard's top arms in 2018 as they look to return to Grand Junction.

Ricky Martinez, ss, Grayson (Texas)
• Transfer student from Sacramento State, expected to make immediate impact at Grayson
• Slick-fielding shortstop with athleticism and balance to actions, also makes an impact with arm strength. 
• Has some offensive upside as well, with a quick linear stroke and feel to use the entire field when hitting. 

Ethan Barker, of, Midland College (Texas)
• Lefthanded hitter with plus athleticism, fits the mold of the leadoff-type hitter with speed and good contact skills
• Led Midland College in stolen bases a year ago with 19, projects to be impactful at Tennessee in the same way
• Should stay in the middle of the field defensively as well, giving the Vols a good athlete in CF

Alerick Soularie, of, San Jacinto (Texas)
• Only a freshman at San Jac, but a part of Tennessee's incoming 2018 class
• Lots of righthanded raw power and big athleticism, giving him significant upside should it all come together.
• Has the potential to play all over the diamond, including behind the plate, where he saw a lot of time in high school. 

Landon Gray, c, Weatherford College (Texas)
• Lefthanded hitting catcher who produced a .961 OPS as a freshman in '17, was drafted by the Phillies in the 38th round as well
• Good strength and physicality to profile, has the physicality necessary to stand up to significant inning behind the plate
• Overall package of tools is balanced and projectable, quality defender who should hit for some power in Knoxville as well. 

Aaron Ashby, lhp, Crowder College (Missouri)
• Logged 66 innings for Crowder as a freshman, striking out 93 in the process and earning a 7-0 record and 5 saves.
• Athletically-built lefthander with good stuff, sits consistently in the 88-90 mph range with developing offspeed stuff. 
• Has potential as both a starter and a reliever, giving him more versatility than others in this class. 

9. Clemson

Head Coach Monte Lee and staff have put together another impact class in 2018, and they've been stringent in their search for junior college players to add to the class, having only one commitment as of yet.

Michael Green, of, Florence Darlington Tech (S.C.)
• A quality player with a good overall collection of tools, Green could fill any number of roles on the Clemson team, though he likely profiles best in right field. 
• A good runner with a plus arm, has shown the ability to hit to all fields and should contribute in each phase for Clemson. 
• Has the potential to develop more in the way of power as well. 

10. Texas

Texas, like several others on this list, has been a bit quieter on the JC recruiting front, having only signed one player thus far, a year after taking 5 JC players in the 2017 class as the new staff established themselves. Their one commit for the 2018 class is an extremely talented one, however. 

Tristen Bayless, lhp, McLennan (Texas)
• Will pitch in the rotation of maybe the best pitching staff in junior college baseball as currently constructed.
• Legitimate MLB Draft prospect at this point, was drafted out of high school late by the Nationals. 
• Has the ability to fill up the strike zone from the left side at 90-93 mph with a swing-and-miss breaking ball as well.

USA Collegiate National Team: Stars

Quick Hits  Each year at the end of June and beginning of July, top collegiate baseball talent from around the nation arrives in Cary, NC at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.  Typically, the rosters are filled with top underclass, non-draft-eligible talent but this year, we will see a sprinkling of upper-classmen as the coaches evaluate just under 60 players to get to their final 28 roster spots.  For a total of two weeks, the Stars Squad and the Stripes Squad will compete against outside competition in North Carolina as well as Virginia before finishing their slate with 5-games against each other at the NTC Complex.  Once the final roster has been announced the team will depart for Taiwan to compete in the 2026 World Baseball Championships, July 11-15.    CNT Stars Position Players  Anthony Pack Jr.  FR / OF / University of Texas ...

16u WWBA Rolls Into Marietta

More than 300 of the nation’s top 16u teams will meet in East Cobb, Georgia this week as the 16u WWBA Championship gets underway. Over 50 ranked teams from across the country will compete for one of the most prestigious titles in travel baseball, drawing scouts and fans from all over. Pool play will commence on Monday, July 6th with the championship game set for July 13th at the storied East Cobb Baseball Complex. Canes National 16u will hold honors of being the top ranked team entering the event as they have earned a No. 2 national ranking following a dominant 17-2-1 start to their season. Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. After a heavy stretch of early summer looks, our scouting staff felt confident rolling out an updated ‘28 national ranking a couple weeks ago. The evaluation window was packed whether it was with our Memorial Day and Summer Kickoff tournaments, UBC action, Sunshine Showcases, and of course the Junior National Showcase which all provided a deep and diverse look at the class against strong competition. Between fresh game evaluations and updated showcase data, we were able to get a clearer picture of where players stand and more importantly how they’ve progressed. We are excited to announce the first selections for the 2026 PG All Star Game from both the Perfect Game Junior and Sophomore National Showcases. The PG All Star Game will be held on Friday, August 14th at Citizens Bank Ballpark, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, and will feature roughly 40 of the top players, predominately from the 2028 class with a few of the very best 2029s also selected. A watchlist has been created from the Junior National Showcase and another group of players will be selected from that showcase towards the end of July as we continue to evaluate players at the major Perfect Game tournaments this summer. Walter Izquierdo Jr. (2031, Miami, Fla.) showed off the upside on the mound for Beast Baseball 13u. The right-handed pitcher went four innings and collected three strikeouts while spreading two hits and two walks for one run. The fastball topped out at 80 and was consistently in the upper- 70s. Showed feel for a curveball with 12-6 shape and some looser vertical depth that was able to get weak contact. Competes in the zone well and showed some feel to work on the arm-side half of the plate. Freedom Classic Opens Holiday Weekend

More than 30 teams from the 14U-18U age divisions will head to Fort Myers, Florida this Fourth of July weekend for the seventh annual Perfect Game Freedom Classic. The tournament, running July 3-6, features several nationally ranked prospects from across the country as teams look to compete for a championship. Headlining the field are twin brothers Derek and Ryan Yormark of Merrick, New York. Right-handed pitcher Derek Yormack is the No. 51-ranked player in the class of 2027, the No. 1 player in New York and the No. 5-ranked right-handed pitcher in the country. First baseman Ryan Yormark comes in just behind his twin brother as the No. 3 overall player in New York, the No. 5 first baseman in the nation and the No. 90-ranked player nationally. Asher Contreras (2030 | Las Vegas, NV) The 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter and outfielder was one of the most dangerous hitters in the tournament for Wow Factor Nv 2030, stuffing the stat sheet while displaying an impressive combination of power and speed. He finished the weekend with 9 hits, including two doubles and a home run, while driving in seven runs and scoring five more. He also swiped three bases and worked three walks, consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses while showing feel for the zone with just one strikeout all weekend.
