Team Elite out-duels Team Louisiana for Upperclass crown

EMERSON, Ga. – Team Elite 17u Prime defeated Team Louisiana in the PG Elite Underclass Championship game by a score of 3-2.

Team Louisiana got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as the tournament’s MVP, Chase Dejean, parked a ball over the left field fience for a home run. The two-run shot drove in Vantrell Reed who walked prior to Dejean’s at-bat.

Team Elite 17u Prime would go quietly in the bottom of the first, but they would answer back in the second inning with three runs of their own. Led off by an Elijah Hilton walk and Joseph Mize single, Brock Marsho would drive them in with a two-run double to left field. Walker Fryer would come up with the eventual game-winning hit for Team Elite with a single to right field that drove in Marsho.

Team Elite and Team Louisiana would both go scoreless the remainder of the game thanks to outstanding pitching out of each team’s bullpen. For Team Louisiana, Austin Acree tossed two hitless innings of relief with a strikeout. Riley Bishop worked two scoreless innings for Team Elite in relief. Team Elite’s Bradley Blalock, who also won the tournament’s MV-Pitcher, was outstanding in relief as well. The Lawrenceville, Georgia native worked two perfect innings with two strikeouts to earn a save and close out the championship win.

Team Elite’s head coach talked after the game about winning the PG Elite Underclass Championship.

“It feels really good,” Team Elite’s Head Coach said after the game. “We have a good group of guys with the tournament going four days, it just shows the depth of our pitchers and hitters. We played all-around good baseball building up for Fort Myers and all of the quality events that PG puts on.”

Dejean batted 6-for-13 (.462) with a double, a triple, seven RBI, and a 94 mph home run in the championship game that traveled 354 feet to earn MVP honors.

Blalock, who was lights out on the mound in each of his outings, including closing out the championship game, had a remarkable stat line for the tournament of five innings, one hit, 11 strikeouts, zero walks and zero runs to garner the MV-Pitcher award.

East Cobb Astros edge Team Elite for Upperclass title

EMERSON, Ga. – The East Cobb Astros defeated Team Elite 18u Prime in the Upperclass age group of the PG Elite Championship on Sunday night by a score of 2-1.

With just 11 hits combined between the two teams, pitching was the story of the matchup. Cooper Stinson started for the Astros and earned the win tossing four innings allowing four hits, striking out six while allowing just one run. The opposing pitcher to Stinson was Team Elite’s Jeff Jenkins. Jenkins took a tough loss while tossing four innings and allowing two runs and striking out two.

The scoring for both teams happened early as each team pushed a run across the plate in their respective halves of the first inning. In the top half, Team Elite got their run as Noah Ledford drove in Isaiah Byars on an RBI groundout after Byars singled and Parker Meadows doubled.

East Cobb would answer right back in the bottom of the frame as Pierce Gallo scored on Bryar Hawkins’ sacrifice fly. The score would remain the same until the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hawkins was at it again as he led off the inning with a single to right field. He would later score the winning run as Taj Bradley drove him in on an RBI single. The score would remain the same as Hawkins came in to pitch the final three innings of scoreless one hit ball.

Gallo was named the MVP of the PG Elite Upperclass Championship for the champion East Cobb Astros. Gallo went 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles, four RBI and three stolen bases.

The Most Valuable Pitcher of the event was Dawson Sweatt of Team Elite 18u Prime. The Auburn commit tossed four scoreless innings in his start on the mound, striking out six and allowing just one hit.

Triton Rays ride big arms to Freshman championship

EMERSON, Ga – The Triton Rays defeated Tri State Arsenal 2021 in the PG Elite Freshman Championship by a score of 1-0.

Both pitching staffs were on display in this game as Parker Hughes and Webb Veronese combined for a complete game shutout for Triton and Drake Donahoe and Cason Henry combined for a complete one unearned game for Tri State.

For the winning Triton Rays, they snuck their lone run on the scoreboard as Giovanni Divine’s double in the bottom of the third inning put Nick Young in scoring position at third base and would later score on a passed ball for the game’s only run.

Combining for just five total hits between the two teams, Veronese and Donahoe both appeared on the mound in the game and neither allowed a hit. They were both stellar, especially Veronese, who was perfect in his 2 1/3 innings with zeros across the stat line and five strikeouts.

The MVP of the tournament was Owen Flynn of Tri State Arsenal. In the tournament, Flynn batted 5-for-14 (.357) with a double, three triples and six RBI.

The MV-Pitcher of the PG Elite Freshman Championship was Parker Hughes of the Triton Rays. Hughes earned his award in the championship game where he tossed 4 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

With another week in the books, some teams at the top continue to prove they are elite, and others continue to fall by the wayside.  Meanwhile, there were several teams that had been lingering outside the Top 25 that had huge weekends to put themselves in the thick of things as every weekend has significant consequences for good or for bad.  The No. 1 UCLA Bruins (29-2) have now pushed their win streak to an incredible 23-games as they swept USC (27-6) who was previously ranked No. 7 in the poll.  The Bruins are off to a perfect (15-0) start in Big Ten play and are without a doubt the most complete team in the country right now.  The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (26-5) move up to No. 2 this week after they dismantled now No. 12 Auburn (22-9) in the midweek and then swept Cal on the West Coast last weekend.  Texas (26-5) moves down one spot to No. 3 this week after...

Welcome to another Perfect Game Mock Draft. This is not your typical mock draft as it features 15 different GMs drafting the first two rounds of the draft. Each member of the mock draft was assigned two teams and as such will be drafting all of the picks in the first two rounds for each responsible team. The actual draft order will be presented below and we will dive into how teams made their selections and how they feel about the players drafted. It is important to note that this is not how we think the draft will play out in almost any capacity. This is simply an exercise 4 months ahead of time with a large portion of the scouting staff and some picks fall under personal favorites, best available, and a multitude of other factors. Chicago White Sox 1:1 Roch Cholowsky, SS, UCLA | 1:41 Jack Radel, RHP, Notre Dame The White Sox don’t overthink here and select Roch Cholowsky, who has...

Lennex Minor (‘28 CA) absolutely destroys this offering to the PS for a 2-run shot. 2-4 on the day w/ 4 driven in. Athletic in the box w/ a quick stroke and strength throughout the frame. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 1

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
Welcome to another week of Perfect Game Small School baseball — and if you're looking for clarity at the top, you've come to the wrong place. Across all three classifications, the No. 1 spot is very much an open question, and nobody is sleeping comfortably right now. In NCAA Division II, Pittsburg State is stumbling at precisely the wrong moment, leaving the door cracked wide open for hungry challengers to come knocking. In the NAIA, defending national champion LSU Shreveport has dropped four straight and suddenly looks far more vulnerable than a program of their pedigree ever expects to be. And in NCAA Division III, the race for the top ranking is less a competition and more a ten-car pileup of elite programs, none of whom have done enough to pull away — and all of whom have done plenty to deserve it. Three classifications, three vacancies at the top, and a whole lot of...
