After the eighth weekend of the 2017 college baseball season we're starting to get a better overall look and feel on which teams truly belong in the rankings as programs continue to separate themselves from one another. The top five teams remain exactly the same this week and looking at their overall body of work it's not too surprising. All five teams opened the season with high expectations and so far those expectations have been met, if not exceeded.

The SEC resembles more of the Wild Wild West as it seems that every team that has a good week takes a step back the following week. South Carolina, who lost their weekend series at home to Vanderbilt, is the highest ranked team in the conference at No. 8, although there are eight SEC teams ranked within 13 places of one another. When you also consider Texas A&M and Ole Miss, both of whom enjoyed successful weeks yet remain unranked, Missouri, who were ranked up until a week ago, and Tennessee, who are coming off of a series win over Florida, and you have the possibility of 12 (of 14 teams) from the SEC in the postseason picture.

And just to prove how quickly fortunes can change, on Saturday night LSU was three outs away from having Arkansas wrap up the weekend series only to score five runs (on a series of errors by the Razorbacks) and even the series. That win gave the Tigers new life, and they made the most of it by winning the series thanks to a complete game effort by Eric Walker on Sunday and a 6-for-13 performance at the plate by Greg Deichmann.

Mississippi State enters the Top 25 this week as they had a statement series win over Kentucky in Starkville. Brent Rooker went off, again, especially on Saturday with a three home run game and overall hit six bombs on the week.

Virginia re-enters the Top 25 at No. 17 coming off of a weekend sweep of Pitt and an impressive 26-8 overall record. While their RPI is high they lost their three weekend series against the ACC's best in Louisville, Clemson and North Carolina. Regardless, the sheer volume of victories is still impressive in the nation's toughest conference this year.

Long Beach State also makes their 2017 Top 25 debut as they continue to take care of business on the West Coast.

2026 College Preview Index With the D-I season opening up right around the corner, our staff came together and took a shot at who they'd pick within 7 different categories. Most are self explanatory while the "Sleeping GIant" category is in reference to a draft prospect outside of our latest Top 50 on the MLB Draft Board. Mid-Atlantic All Region & Top Tools

The Mid-Atlantic Region lost its only Perfect Game All-American when catcher Andrew Costello left his Pennsylvania high school early and enrolled at Wake Forest for the spring semester.  The Region ends up being dominated by underclassmen, with seven juniors and even a pair of talented sophomores getting recognition. The story of the spring could very well be watching the young power arms in the Region come outdoors and show their talents on the mound.  Pennsylvania juniors Cole Kuhn and Trent Lutz have been getting lots of off-season attention along with New Jersey senior Alex Weingartner. COASTAL REGION (NC, SC, VA, WV)  The first thing that stands out about the players on the Coastal Region team is that this is undoubtedly the fastest All-Region Team in the country.  There are four or five players who could legitimately have 80 grades on their running speed from the region and all have other tools to back up their speed. Another thing that jumps out is the quality of the juniors on the team.  While the region features only one 2025 PG All-American in left-handed pitcher Carson Bolemon, there are six juniors on the All-Region team who are ranked in the top 34 in the 2027 class, with plenty more talented underclassmen just behind them.  Three region high schools break into the Top 50 in the Perfect Game Pre-Season High School Rankings.  Charlotte Catholic at 33rd overall and Metrolina Christian Academy at 42nd represent the North Carolina schools...

SOUTHWEST REGION (AZ, NM, NV, UT, CO)  The most dominant tool in the Southwest Region for the 2026 season is undoubtedly power at the plate, as most players featured below not only have the size and bat speed to drive the ball but have put up the numbers as well.  While that isn’t exactly surprising given that virtually the entire region plays at elevation, it certainly stands out on the individual top prospects.
