PG Rawlings Select #3 Preview

Photo: Perfect Game

Cartersville Hurricanes
(Cartersville, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Devin Warner (SS, 2018, 36)
  • Anthony Seigler (C/BHP, 2018, 54)
  • Curtis Wilkes (OF/RHP, 2018, High Follow)
  • Jonathan “JP” Martin (C/MIF/RHP, 2019, 190)
  • Mason Barnett (RHP, 2019, 401)
  • Jake Gooch (C/IF, 2019, 431)

Hitting

The Hurricanes boast two of the best hitters in the 2018 class with the powerful Devin Warner and the slick hitting Anthony Siegler. Both will anchor the lineup with Seigler battine near the top of the lineup and Warner batting in the middle to drive in runs. JP Martin is more of a swiss army knife-type player who will play all across the diamond and has had a hot season at the dish thus far.

Pitching

Siegler has also been the ace thus far on the season as he provides intriguing value pitching with both hands. He is very effective from both sides and will likely see the ball in game one of the event. JP Martin and Mason Barnett will see time on the mound as well and the Hurricanes staff as a whole has shown depth throughout the season.

Synopsis

The Hurricanes have been in the Top 50 HS teams during the season at various points and have demonstrated that they are one of the top teams in the state. They have the players to win the event and boast excellent hitters and pitchers. They have one of the top teams in this event but they will need to be at the top of their game to finish on top.

Chattahoochee Cougars (Johns Creek, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Nick Jones (LHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Ryan Zweber (LHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Sean Zweber (OF/LHP, 2017, Follow)
  • Ethan Bowdoin (LHP/OF, 2018, Top 500)
  • Mason List (SS, 2018, Follow)
  • David Rokose (LHP, 2019, 442)

Hitting

The Cougars boast a formidable roster with talented players throughout. The Zweber brothers will spend time both on the mound and in the outfield and should provide some value in the batter’s box. Mason List is a younger player, a junior, but has experience of playing on the varsity roster and adds another weapon offensively.

Pitching

The pitching staff is loaded with lefthanded prospects and they are led by junior Ethan Bowdoin. The uncommitted southpaw has been up to 88 mph in the past and showed solid pitchability and arm talent at the 2016 PG Underclass All American Games. The Zweber’s will also see time on the mound and sophomore David Rokose will undoubtedly see important time on the mound.

Synopsis

The pitchers stand out on the Cougars and the determining factor in how far they make it will be the strength of the offense. Bowdoin, both Zwebers, and Rokose should provide quality innings on the mound but the offense will be a question mark. If the offense and the pitching are in sync, the defense should shine as well and lead the Cougars all weekend.

Dunwoody Wildcats (Smyrna, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Shota Barbeau (OF, 2017, High Follow)
  • Zach Morochnik (MIF/RHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Evan Romeo (OF, 2017, Follow)
  • Josh Hudgins (3B/RHP, 2018, Top 500)
  • Jack Hardin (1B, 2018, High Follow)

Hitting

A collection of senior talent will lead the Wildcats offense in the form of Shota Barbeau, Zach Morochnik, and Evan Romeo. Barbeau will provide line drive contact and speed from the top of the order and Morochnik and Romeo will provide depth throughout the lineup. Josh Hudgins is a two-way talent who will also see time in the lineup.

Pitching

Two righthanded two-way prospects will take the spotlight in this event as Morochnik will work in the low- to mid 80s and Hudgins will work in the mid- to upper 80s. There are numerous two-way prospects but it will be up to some of the primary arms to take a majority of the innings and lead the pitching staff.

Synopsis

The Wildcats have an interesting assortment of talent throughout the roster and the senior-led squad has the experience and maturity to handle an event like this. They haven’t jumped off to the hottest start on the year, but a strong weekend tournament midway through the season can help propel them through conference play.

Pepperell Dragons (Lindale, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Wesley Wade (SS/RHP, 2019, High Follow)

Hitting

The Dragons come into this event with one of the younger rosters in the event. There are only four seniors on the team but they will rely on the senior leadership of some of their position players such as third baseman Avery Gambrell and junior outfielder Trevor Thomas.

Pitching

Senior righthander Cole Baker and junior lefthander Brett Baker will both see time on the mound throughout the event as primary arms. One of the interesting players on the roster is two-way sophomore Wesley Wade who has shown success both at the plate and on the mound throughout the young season.

Synopsis

The Dragons are a young team, but they have the pieces and building blocks in place to build a successful team. The young players will likely determine how far Pepperell goes in the event with their talented young players playing crucial roles throughout the weekend.

Sandy Creek Patriots (Tyrone, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Thomas Farr (SS/RHP, 2017, Top 500)
  • Matthew Barrow (RHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Vincent Bartolomei (RHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Parker Mallett (OF, 2017, NR)

Hitting

Sandy Creek enters the event hovering a bit above .500 on the young season as they look to jump start the second half of their high school schedule. Parker Mallet, a Vassar College commit, will be one of the offensive leaders and will look to set the tone early in the form of scoring runs.

Pitching

The pitching staff is deep and led by talented righthander Thomas Farr. The Northwest Florida State College commit has been up to 90 mph in the past and has showed out at numerous PG events in the past. Matthew Barrow and Vincent Bartolomei are two other righthanded pitchers who should be able to make an impact.

Synopsis

The Patriots will be relying upon their pitching depth to be able to limit opposing offenses during the course of the weekend. Farr will likely get the ball in game one and look to set the tone for the entire event. The offense will determine how far they make it and if they score enough runs, they have the talent to hoist the trophy.

Walnut Grove Warriors (Loganville, Ga.)

Top Prospects (Position, Class, PG National Rank)

  • Jaree Pledger (OF, 2017, Top 500)
  • Cody Lewis (RHP, 2017, High Follow)
  • Clay Baker (2B, 2018, NR)
  • Ben Davis (C, 2018, NR)
  • Jake Love (3B, 2019, NR)

Hitting

The Warriors of Walnut Grove are another team that has a lot of depth throughout their roster and the offense is led by Georgia Highlands commit Jaree Pledger. The outfielder has strength throughout his swing and also has very good speed that plays well on the base paths. Junior contributors should be able to make big impacts as Clay Baker, Ben Davis, and sophomore Jake Love will all see time as well.

Pitching

The team has a dearth of two-way players but primary pitcher Cody Lewis is a name to watch. He is a very projectable arm who works primarily in the low- to mid 80s. Sophomore lefthander Eli McMullen should also see time and Nathan Boyce has two-way potential as well.

Synopsis

The depth through all facets of the roster is what stands out about the Warriors and they have the pieces to make a successful run. The pitching staff, defense, and offense all work nicely together and they look to bring their winning record into the PG Rawlings Select Classic #3.

Will Dembo
Article Image
After an action-packed week at the 16u WWBA Championships, the tournament came down to two of the nation’s top teams battling for one of travel baseball’s most prestigious titles. No. 5 ranked SBA Bolts National faced No. 60 Alpha Prime 2028 after both teams reached the championship undefeated, but the SBA Bolts were the sole team to exit without a loss, defeating Alpha Prime 10-2 in mercy rule fashion and capture the national title behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances. The SBA Bolts were perfect throughout their week, running the table and going 11-0 while outscoring their opponents by an impressive margin of 108-25. “It was awesome,” SBA Head Coach Travis Thompson said on the mercy rule victory. “It just kind of culminated our week. It's been a long week. I can't even remember our first game, which felt like three weeks ago. The...

Coastal Region Scout Notes

Article Image
Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Sam Jobe (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, with a lean, athletic frame and plenty of projection. He bats and throws right-handed. Jobe shows good feel for the...

14u BCS Scout Note Recap

Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. Owns a big frame with present physicality and does a good job keeping the hands connected throughout the swing. The barrel works efficiently through the zone and there is a solid offensive foundation present. Currently ranked as the No. 66 catcher nationally.  Gavin Politz (2030 OF, FL) continued a strong tournament...

Connor Ashley (‘29, FL) has struck out six over six no hit innings thus far. Got the FB up to 87 w/ feel for a sharp two-plane slider. #PGWS @Florida_PG pic.twitter.com/M7mEmTH8pk — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Connor Ashley (’29, Minneola, FL) was stellar on Sunday, striking out seven in a seven inning no hitter. He operates from a medium-to-large right-handed frame with length, room to fill, and lower half strength. Ashley works exclusively from the stretch, starting at the belt before working into a higher compact leg lift, firing down the mound via a long arm action. He releases from a high three-quarters slot, with the fastball jumping from the hand up to 87. Ashley mixed in a sharp 11-5 breaking ball with depth and late bite, a true swing-and-miss offering.  Matthew Hernandez (’29, Miami Lakes, FL) has posted strong numbers on both...

Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

John Coppolella
Article Image
The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it.    Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores  Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI...

High speed look at the FF-SL-CH from '27 RHP Liam McGeady (OH)... #NatElite @PG_OhioValley @Cincy_Legends https://t.co/hhoDL7DBbi pic.twitter.com/Ts79GLPGoU — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) July 12, 2026 Liam McGeady (2027, Liberty Township, Ohio) had the stuff working on Saturday morning, getting the start for Legends Scout 2027. The uncommitted right-hander ran it up to 91 and sat 88-90 with a full starter’s mix. All three of the secondaries played well and project moving forward. The curveball worked in the mid-70s with good depth and healthy shape. The slider operated in the 79-82 range with gyro spin and short break. McGeady rounded out the repertoire with a changeup that showed big fade and depth, proving effective versus lefties. He ended the outing going five ⅔ innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits, striking out six total. The tall and long 6-foot-5,...

Vincent Cervino

With the 2026 MLB Draft officially complete, let's quickly turn our eyes to the 2027 group and do a way too early mock draft. Leading the way is shortstop Brendan Lawson out of the University of Florida, setting the trend as three of the top four names all call shortstop home with Dylan Seward and Carter Hadnot.
