Tennessee 5, Georgia 4

After taking game one of the series on Thursday night, Georgia sent out their ace, Robert Tyler, in order to take the first two games. The game was actually moved up from its scheduled 7:00 p.m. start and played at 3:00 p.m. to beat the impending storms. Rallies in both the sixth inning and in the top half of the ninth gave Tennessee a 5-4 win and a chance to take the series in the rubber match tomorrow.

Tyler still looks the part on the mound with a strong, durable build at 6-foot-4, 225-pounds with long limbs. He works from an upbeat delivery with minimal lower half drive, and shows his back completely to the batter in his windup. He has a long, loose arm action from a higher three-quarters arm slot.

No one will doubt the arm speed or his fastball, which worked routinely in the upper-90s throughout his 5 1/3 innings on the mound and touched 99 mph in the second. He throws really easy and the ball explodes out of his hand with exceptional angle towards the plate. It has subtle arm-side life, but heavy action out of his hand. The main concern is still his command, and with his long arms he had trouble replicating his release point. At foot strike, his arm is well behind is head and is another explanation for the command issues.

He did do much better to limit the damage on balls put in play, with only four hits allowed and a pair of them coming via the infield variety. What did him in were the four walks allowed. To his credit, when Tyler missed he missed low and out of the zone, rather than in the middle of the plate.
