Spring League Week 4 Wrap Up

Week 4 of the Iowa Spring Wood Bat Scout League provided some exciting moments and match ups of the top players in Iowa.  Saturday's games were very cold and windy (again) with Sunday giving us some warmer temperatures and a little bit of rain to keep things interesting.  Here's some of the top performances from Week 4.

Spencer Van Scoyoc vs Keaton Winn pitching match up
Sunday provided us with a good pitching match up of high end arms in the Purple Haze/Navy Seals game.  Spencer Van Scoyoc (2016 - Jefferson HS) was very sharp for the Purple Haze pitching at 85-88 MPH with his fastball.  He located his fastball well with an outstanding 10/11 first pitch strikes.  Van Scoyoc flashed his normal tight curve ball and threw it for strikes.  He also swung the bat well hammering a deep home run to right field off Winn.  Keaton Winn (2016 - Pekin HS) started the game amped up and was pitching steady at 88-90 MPH touching 91 a couple times.  He wasn't as sharp as he'd like to be in this outing and struggled throwing his curve ball for strikes.  Winn showed a very fast arm action and showed why he's generating interest this spring.  Connor Van Scoyoc (2018 - Jefferson HS) also pitched in the game and showed good arm strength topping out at 88 MPH.  He struck out 7 in 3 innings while allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs.

Grant Judkins vs Cam Baumann pitching match up
The other top pitching match up of the weekend was in the Black Magic/Whitecaps game featuring future Iowa teammates Grant Judkins (2016 - Pella HS) and Cam Baumann (2017 - Fairfield HS).  Judkins allowed 2 hits in 3 innings flashing a fastball topping out at 89 MPH.  He struck out 4 while walking 1 allowing no earned runs.  Judkins has a loose quick arm action that projects for more velocity.  Judkins also had a perfect weekend at the plate going 5 for 5 with a double and 2 RBI.   Baumann allowed 2 hits in 3 innings while topping out at 88 MPH.  He struck out 3, walked 1, and allowed no earned runs.  He is an athletic two-way player who has a lot of upside.

Top Performances Team by Team

Aquasox
Week 4 proved to be a tough weekend for the Aquasox as they went 0-3-1 on the weekend.  Gunnar Bosking (2017 - Washington HS) pitched well for the Aquasox going 2 innings and allowing 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.  He was efficient only throwing 26 pitches in his 2 innings of work.  Zach Bierman (2019 - Western Dubuque HS) pitched 3 innings allowing 1 earned run and struck out 3.  He topped out at 77 MPH on a cold windy day.  The Aquasox struggled to get anything going offensively this weekend collecting just 8 hits on 73 at bats.  Dalton Graven (2016 - Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and Gunnar Bosking each had an extra base hit for the Aquasox.

Black Magic
The Black Magic posted a 2-1-1 record on the weekend and were led by the aforementioned Cam Baumann on the mound.  Ryan Wyant (2016 - Linn Mar HS) pitched 3 innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run while striking out 5 and walking 3.  Cade Lisk (2018 - Fairfield HS) pitched 4 innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 earned run while striking out 8 and walking 1.  Brayden Frazier (2018 - Jefferson HS) swung the bat very well on Saturday and went 4 for 10 on the weekend with 2 doubles and a triple.  He's an athletic young player with good young hitting tools that project well.  Joel Thompson (2017 - Lewis Central HS) collected 3 hits with 3 runs and 3 RBI as well.  He's a projectable bodied catcher with some strength at the plate and good arm strength from behind the plate.

Blue Crew
The Blue Crew went 1-3 on the weekend and were hampered by 22 walks issued by their pitching staff.  Max Steffens (2016 - Central DeWitt HS) pitched well going 5 innings allowing just 1 earned run while striking out 7 with no walks.  His fastball topped out at 84 MPH and he threw his curveball for strikes.  Steffens had an impressive statistic of throwing 80% strikes!  Andy Whiteman (2017 - Bettendorf HS) had a good weekend going 3 for 8 at the plate with 1 run and 2 RBI. Luke Soko (2018 - Bettendorf HS) went 2 for 7 on the weekend wit a run and an RBI.  They look to bounce back next weekend with a better showing.

Golden Bears
The Golden Bears played very well in week 4 going a perfect 4-0 on the weekend.  They received contributions from numerous players as they hit a whopping .353 as a team on the weekend!  Tyler Hovick (2016 - Roland-Story HS) led the way for the Golden Bears going 5 for 9 with a home run, 3 runs, 4 RBI, and was also walked twice.  He's swinging the bat well and consistently squaring the ball up.  Jordan Wilson (2017 - Ankeny Centennial HS) went 4 for 9 on the weekend with a double, 4 runs, 4 RBI, and 2 walks.  He's a fast twitch athlete who has bat speed and can really run.  Nick Hagen (2017 - Burlington HS) was 4 for 8 on the weekend with a double, a home run, 3 runs, 3 RBI, and 2 walks.  Hagen has good bat speed and has some pop when he squares it up.  AJ Pierce (2017 - Ankeny Centennial HS) pitched well going 3 innings throwing only 27 pitches.  He threw 82% strikes and allowed just 1 hit while striking out 2.  Luke Patzner (2018 - Urbandale HS) struck out 6 in his 4 innings of work topping out at 84 MPH.  Dawson Deitch (2017 - North Polk HS) threw 2 innings allowing just 1 hit with 1 strikeout.

Green Goblins

The Green Goblins won 3 of 4 games this weekend and had quite a few quality performances.  Austin Marchesani (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) was dominant in his 3 innings of work against the Red Dragons throwing just 35 pitches and throwing strikes at an 80% clip.  His fastball topped out at 82 MPH and he allowed just 1 hit while striking out 6.  Connor Schultz (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) threw 73% strikes in his 3 innings of work topping out at 84 MPH.  He allowed 1 earned run while striking out 4 with 1 walk.  Luke Loecher (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) threw 4 innings allowing just 1 hit while striking out 5 with no walks.  He topped out at 82 MPH and only threw 43 pitches in his 4 innings of work.  Ethan Hayes (2017 - Cedar Falls HS) swung the bat very well going 5 for 8 with a triple, 3 runs, 2 RBI, and 2 walks.  He has a short swing path to the ball with good bat speed.  Lincoln Riley (2019 - Washington HS) went 4 for 10 on the weekend with 2 doubles, 3 runs, and 3 RBI.  He's shown solid young hitting tools to work with.

Grey Wolves
The Grey Wolves went 1-3 on the weekend with a short squad and competed well.  Brett McCleary (2017 - Iowa City High) pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 hits with no earned runs.  McCleary struck out 7 and walked 2 while topping out at 84 MPH.  He also swung the bat well going 3 for 8 on the weekend with 4 runs and 2 walks.  Evan Paulus (2019 - Newman Catholic HS) pitched 4 innings allowing no hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk.  He threw a lot of strikes and competed well.  Paulus also went 2 for 8 on the weekend with 2 doubles, 2 runs, 1 RBI, and was walked once.  He's a solid young two-way player.  Nick Hofsommer (2017 - Solon HS) hammered a home run off the scoreboard in left field at Waterloo West HS in tough conditions.  He has some bat speed and some strength in his swing.  Caden Kratz (2018 - Newman Catholic HS) pitched 2 innings and allowed no hits while striking out 2.  He was around the plate and threw a lot of strikes.

Navy Seals
The Navy Seals went 1-3 on the weekend with a short squad.  They swung the bats well and were led by Cole Loeffelbein (2017 - Glenwood HS) who went 4 for 10 on the weekend with 1 run, 3 RBI, and 1 walk.  Javin Drake (2016 - Wilton HS) also swung the bat well going 4 for 10 with a double, 3 runs, and 2 RBI.  Drake also pitched well allowing no earned runs in 3 innings of work while topping out at 83 MPH.  Cole Hassman (2017 - Southeast Polk HS) showed good pop at the plate hammering a home run and a double on the weekend.  Jared Townsend (2019 - Wilton HS) didn't allow a hit in his 2 innings of work while striking out 4.  Evan Reifert (2017 - Wilton HS) showed good velocity again this weekend topping out at 88 MPH.  He struck out 7 in his 4 innings of work but struggled throwing consistent strikes.  When he puts it all together, Reifert has a chance to be a high end arm.

Purple Haze
The Purple Haze went 3-1 on the weekend and were led by the aforementioned Van Scoyoc brothers on the mound.  Peyton Stephens (2016 - Carlisle HS) had himself a very good weekend both at the plate and on the mound.  He pitched 3 innings and allowed 2 hits with no runs, 6 strikeouts, and 1 walk.  He also topped out at 85 MPH and threw 70% strikes.  At the plate, Stephens went 5 for 8 on the weekend with a double, 4 runs, and 3 walks.  Max McCay (2016 - Carlisle HS) went 4 for 8 on the weekend with a double, an RBI and 2 walks.  He also showed very good receiving and blocking skills behind the plate.  Luke Eldred (2016 - Mt. Vernon HS) pitched well in his 4 innings of work allowing just 1 hit, no runs with 4 strikeouts and no walks.  He was in complete control and pitched at 83-85 MPH.  Nic McCay (2018 - Carlisle HS) was dominant on the mound in his 2 innings of work allowing no hits while striking out 5 with 1 walk.  He showed a sharp curveball and threw it for strikes.  He topped out at 83 MPH with more to come.

Red Dragons
The Red Dragons went 3-1 on the weekend and were led by Bryce Ball (2016 - Newman Catholic HS) at the plate.  Ball went 5 for 8 with a double, 6 runs, 3 RBI, and 3 walks.  He's a big bodied 1B with a good swing and big time power potential.  Aiden Crowley (2018 - Iowa City West HS) had a good weekend going 4 for 8 with 4 runs, 3 RBI, and 3 walks.  He showed good patience at the plate and barrel skills this weekend.  Eric Steyer went 4 for 6 with 4 runs and 1 RBI.  Steyer has a projectable body with some bat speed.  Drew Schmit (2016 - Ames HS) pitched very well going 4 innings allowing just 1 hit and no runs with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.  Schmit topped out at 84 MPH and he has good sink and run on his fastball.  Blake Preston (2016 - Ames HS) topped out at 86 MPH with his fastball, but struggled with his command.  He has a quick arm with more in there.  Ryan Hart (2017 - Gilbert HS) pitched well going 3 innings allowing no earned runs, 2 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Whitecaps
The Whitecaps went 1-3 on the weekend and were led by the aforementioned Grant Judkins.  Ben Norman (2016 - Roosevelt HS) swung the bat well going 5 for 7 with 3 runs, 3 RBI, and 2 walks.  Norman has very good bat speed and has good barrel skills from the left side.  The Kirkwood CC combination of Porter Hummel (2016 - West Sioux HS), Peyton Long (2016 - WDM Valley HS), and Cal Stalzer (2016 - WDM Valley HS) pitched well against the Black Magic.  Hummel struck out 5 in his 3 innings of work topping out at 82 MPH.  He's a 3 pitches for strikes lefty who throws a lot of strikes.  Long allowed 1 hit in his 2 innings of work topping out at 86 MPH.  He's a very interesting arm that projects for more velocity.  Stalzer was dominant in his 2 innings of work not allowing a hit and striking out 3 while topping out at 85 MPH.  Stalzer throws a ton of strikes and is a competitor.

13u World Series Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff

Michael Wedgeworth (2030, Flomaton, AL) had put the two way ability on full display so far this week, dominating from both sides. On the mound Wedgeworth ran the fastball up to 84 (81-83) with ease to the delivery. Broke off a couple nasty curveballs that induced swing and miss, as well as freezing hitters for punch outs. Collected six in his four inning complete game. He also would not be denied at the plate going 3-5 in the first two days with two doubles. Very intriguing young player as the body continues to grow.  Tyler Bellush (2031, Summerville, SC) is a sure handed shortstop for the Canes Nation squad. Swings it from the left side of the plate and the barrel accuracy has really stuck out thus far. 3-4 through the first couple days with a double and two triples, Bellush has also walked twice and collected 3 RBI along the way. Yesterday against USA Prime with the bases loaded,...

Oliver Lindstrom (2028, Green Bay, WI) created some of the loudest offensive moments of the weekend while producing across the board, finishing with six hits, eight RBI, and a home run. The right-handed hitter showed the ability to stay through the baseball and drive it with authority. Creates quality leverage through the lower half while arriving in strong hitting positions early, allowing the barrel to work with intent through the zone. The blend of power, athleticism, and all-fields impact stood out throughout the event.  Dominic Haigh (2028, South Bend, IN) was one of the most productive hitters at the event, collecting 10 hits while consistently creating pressure on opposing defenses. Made life difficult on pitchers with a relentless approach, routinely extending at-bats and forcing them to work deep into counts. The operation remains simple and efficient, featuring an early...

Performance Baseball Rolls On

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Championship teams often reveal themselves when the game isn’t going their way. Performance Baseball 2028/Milwaukee Brewers Scout Team did exactly that. Trailing Florida Burn 2028 Scout through four innings, the Brewers refused to panic. Instead, they relied on timely hitting, consistent pitching, and an unselfish approach at the plate, rallying a five-run fifth inning before pulling away for a 9-5 victory to clinch their spot in the semifinals. The comeback was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Six different players drove in runs, including two RBIs each from Aiden Capobianco and Cameron Massey, while Matthew Heredia, Parker Weston, Ethan Smith, and Aj Bonnette each added an RBI of their own. On the mound, Derek Wenzel set the tone with 3.2 solid innings before Ethan Smith shut the door in relief, helping preserve the comeback victory. Although the Brewers have had a...

Emily Hicks
Article Image
JK Select Hawaii capped off an impressive tournament run by defeating GBG Vegas 14u Red14-4 in the championship game on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, claiming the 14u West World Series title. From the opening pitch, JK Select controlled the pace of the game. The offense jumped out early, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning after timely hits from MVP Sean Shindo and Kade Manarpaac.
