Collegiate National Team Scout Blogs

Over the last week while covering the USA Collegiate National Team I took note of their starting outfield – Louisville’s Corey Ray, Florida’s Buddy Reed, and Texas A&M’s Nick Banks – and made mention how all have the ability to become high round and potential first-round selections in next June’s draft. Still early in the process with the 2015 just a couple of weeks behind us, there’s another outfielder who is putting himself in that group and it’s Mercer’s
Kyle Lewis. Don’t be fooled though, it’s not as if Lewis had a pedestrian spring and is just finding some early season mojo with the Orleans Firebirds. It’s quite the opposite actually as Lewis hit .367-17-56 and was one of the more anticipated arrivals this summer in Massachusetts.

The three-hole hitter in a Firebirds' lineup that features perhaps the most star power and name recognition in the league, Lewis was able to get to the plate five times Monday night thanks in part to 16 Orleans’ hits. His frame is one that you don’t often see on the collegiate side as he’s long and projectable yet physical at the same time while still retaining loose and twitchiness in everything that he does. Listed at 6-foot-4, 205-pounds Lewis looks stronger and more filled out, closer to 215-220 pounds, but whatever his actual weight is it doesn’t seem to affect the way he swings the bat. A righthander hitter, Lewis has a higher leg lift than most though it doesn’t appear to impede his timing at all as you may think at first glance.
