College Notebook: November 21

UCF Knights 2025 Highlights: When Rich Wallace took over the program in 2024 and his club bullied its way to an at-large NCAA bid, expectations and energy surrounding the program returned to the glory days of the early 2000’s. However, the void created by the class that fell short during the turnover, his club struggled to a (29-26) record last year, finished 13th overall in the Big 12 and fell short of the conference tournament. The offense was one of the nation’s best hitting .319 as a team, scoring over 7-runs per game and they were a solid defensive squad. The issue came with the inconsistency on the mound, the inability to figure out a rotation and struggled to secure the backend of games. The staff feels strongly that they addressed their issues from a recruiting standpoint and are optimistic heading into the new year. Impact Returners: · Junior Andrew Williamson...

MLB Draft Rewind: #1 Pick Last 5 Years

Isaiah Burrows
Article Image
It’s fun to reminisce. The last five MLB Amateur Draft classes have brought a bevy of incoming talent to the big leagues. As always, hindsight is 20/20 and some picks nailed and some picks have been underwhelming of sorts. This piece highlights the last five No. 1 overall picks from 2021-2025 and if we had a redo, what would each member of the draft team do and why? Although the 2025 class has yet to really begin, it promotes an interesting dynamic to see who each member favored if they had the choice.  You may be surprised at some of the selections below. We hope you enjoy it. Let’s dive in.  2025 Original Pick: Washington Nationals - Eli Willits, SS, Fort Cobb-Broxton HS (Okla.) Henninger's New Pick: Washington Nationals - Kade Anderson, LHP, Louisiana State  The 2025 draft class has not had a ton of experience in pro ball so there is a lot to still sort out...

Leyland Henry doesn’t miss this as he launches a towering 💣 off the scoreboard in LF. Ridiculous power & getting to it easily. #NASSC @Texas_PG https://t.co/2TqpVCgx0t pic.twitter.com/XdT4kjenPx — Perfect Game Youth (@PGYouthBB) November 3, 2025 2030 1B Leyland Henry (Houston, Texas) is the kind of hitter that people stop in their tracks to watch, and he gave quite a show a couple of times in Houston with 2 of the longest home runs of the weekend, one to the pull side and the other an impressive one the other way. He is as strong as it gets for this age, and he has shown that he’s already starting to clean up physically, which will allow him to continue to hit at a high level as the game speeds up. 2030 OF Tyler Early (Houston, Texas) is the top-ranked guy in this class mostly for the power he brings, the kind of juice we’ve possibly never seen before someone...

Most Likely To Make a Huge Jump in the Rankings in 2026 Julian Garcia, RHP, San Pedro, CA. St. John Bosco HS (2026) Garcia, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound right-hander, is poised for a significant leap in the 2026 rankings despite coming off an arm injury last season that limited his exposure. His recent performance showcased a fastball that consistently touched 91-93 mph with exceptional riding life, complemented by a mid-70s curveball with spins north of 2800 RPM. The arm action suggests untapped potential, positioning him as a name to watch closely as he continues to refine his command and secondary offerings. Garcia's recent commitment to Long Beach State further underscores his upside, as he fits the mold of a high-ceiling college arm with the tools to ascend rapidly in the prospect hierarchy. -SD I guess I kinda teased this in the Jupiter preview when I brought up Taden Krogsgaard as a...

Most Likely To Make a Huge Jump in the Rankings in 2026 RJ Shields (2027, Venice, Fl.) Shields took some significant strides throughout 2025, especially on the mound. The fastball reached 95 mph in recent months and he projects well with great athleticism and a sharp breaking ball. Shields is also a left-handed bat with good thump in the stick. The Mississippi State commit shot up the rankings following a loud fall and looks poised to continue to climb. -KP High speed BP swing from '27 OF Gavin Ruvalcaba (FL)... #JrNational @Florida_PG https://t.co/OwU9I0u6eY pic.twitter.com/gjYZbmCPGE — PG Showcases (@PGShowcases) June 12, 2025 Gavin Ruvalcaba (2027, Hialeah, Fl.) Ruvalcaba had a very strong 2025 and looks to be continuing on that path. The Duke commit has plenty of athleticism and is very well rounded with good tools across the board. The stroke is smooth and produces...

Nathaniel Choe (2030, Buford, GA) was a consistent hitter in the Georgia American lineup as he went 9-for-15 on the weekend. Choe sits at 5-foot-6, 115-pounds as a right-handed hitting shortstop. Choe hit .600 on the weekend with one double, four inside the park home runs, stole six bases, and reached base three times. He had good bat-to-ball skills with control of the barrel and a quick runner. Choe showcased good arm strength and range when at shortstop. Class of 2029 National Rankings Electric stuff here from ‘29 RHP Oliver Olson (PA) at the #NEFallChamp. The 6-foot-3 right-hander moves extremely well down the slope, has tons of present arm speed and immense physical projection that is only going to further his velocity upticks over the next several years. Add-in a feel for pitching, aptitude to spin the baseball and a bulldog mentality, and you have all the...
