Weekend Preview 6/18 - 6/21

Jordan Posway

The PG Super25 National Championship season has officially begun as the 13u teams will take the field in Fort Myers this Friday. The other age groups will not resume National Championship play until July, but with each passing day, their time to earn a berth is running out. The growing sense of urgency to secure a National Championship berth will make for a great weekend of baseball, as there will be six more spots on the line. Here’s a quick preview of this weekend’s events:

Southern Ohio Championship

Last weekend in Blue Ash, Ohio, 15u teams battled it out for a spot in the Ohio Valley Regional Championship. This time around, the 16u and 17u teams will get their turn. Among the 22 teams in the 16u Southern Ohio Championship, the Midwest Prospects and the Ohio Glaciers stick out as serious contenders to win the championship. Similar to their 16u counterparts, the 17u Midwest Prospects are a highly talented bunch, but they will have their hands full with teams such as the Cincinnati Stix and the Midwest Marlins who have proven themselves to be formidable opponents.

15u Ohio Valley Regional Championship

The Tennessee Knights, winners of last weekend’s 15u Southern Ohio Championship, look to carry their momentum into Lexington, Kentucky. As Southern Ohio Champions and veterans of the 2014 National Championship, the Knights will be tough to beat. However, they will have some strong competition in the form of Locos Express, Ohio Heat Baseball, and the Vipers. All of which are very capable teams that could pull off an upset.

Deep South Regional

The Deep South Regional will be held over two states. The 16u teams will congregate in Lake Charles, Louisiana, while the 17u teams will take the field in Nashville, Tennessee. A National Championship berth will be on the line at both locations. There will be six Marucci teams attending the 16u tournament, all of which are expected to be competitive. Standing in the way of Marucci’s championship aspirations is SBA 16u. As veterans of the 2014 National Championship, SBA 16u looks to make a second consecutive trip in 2015. University of Cincinnati commit Cole Murphy, hopes to lead Cincinnati Baseball Club past the competition and into Fort Myers, Florida for the National Championship. To do so, his team must go through Carson Pack, a University of Tennessee commit, and the Knoxville Stars 17u who are every bit as talented.

Mid-Atlantic Regional

The Mid-Atlantic Regional will be taking place all over New Jersey. There will be 38 teams of the 15u age group in Bridgeton, including the defending 2014 PG Super25 National Champions, the Tri-State Arsenal. The Arsenal are always a tough match-up, but Gallagher Team Mizuno is another team that can make some noise. Tri-State Arsenal’s 16u counterparts are also the defending 2014 National Champions of their age group. However, NY Steelheads Gold and 42 other teams will be gunning for the Arsenal to make sure they don’t repeat as 16u champs. The Whiz Kids led by Mike Siani will be a team to keep an eye on during the 17u tournament. Siani is a recent University of Virginia commit who is expected to perform at a high level. To no one’s surprise, the Tri-State Arsenal is pretty good in this tournament as well. Vanderbilt commit Jason Groome will be on the mound for the Arsenal this weekend, which should make for some exciting baseball. Come Sunday, three more National Championship berths will be decided.

15u/2018 Grad Texas State Univeristy

Texas State University will be hosting 21 teams to compete in their 15u tournament. Among the teams to watch is the Columbia Angels White. The Angels are always a competitive bunch, as they are loaded with talent. However, they might run into some trouble with a hungry TC Nationals Force squad.

Tag ‘em Super Series

There will be two Tag ‘em Super Series events this weekend. Teams from both the 11u and 14u age groups will battle for supremacy starting Friday in what should be a very fun weekend in Levittown, New York.
