UBC Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2

Mason Yokum (2023, Leesburg, Va.) opened up day three on the mound for the Canes National 16u team and gave them four solid innings where he battled some command but showed solid stuff that projects well. Opening up 87-89 mph with the fastball, he was efficient in challenging hitters as worked to both halves and attacked the top part of the zone. After settling into the mid-80s, he battled some strike issues but was able to work his way out of jams with missing bats with both the fastball and what showed as a quality breaking ball with hard bite and solid depth to it. The delivery is athletic, and the arm is quick which pairs well with his physical projection at a lean 6-foot-2, 165 pounds and should give him a good chance to see a continued rise in velocity over the next couple years.

Colby Wallace (2023, Biscoe, N.C.) came in after Yokum and showed similarities in terms of stuff but pounded the zone a bit more and was more efficient in doing so. The 6-foot-3 righthander has good physicality throughout but still looks to project a good bit from a physical standpoint. The fastball already works in the 86-88 mph range showing good life to the top of the zone while the breaking ball already flashed as a true swing-and-miss pitch with late vertical bite to it while he is able to manipulate both the speed and size and land it at will. He’s a position prospect primarily who swings it with some strength, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two-way abilities continue to shine moving forward.
