Team Sheet: Oregon

Tyler Henninger
What Happened: The Ducks went down to Tempe sporting a 9-3 record and continued their winning ways in a tough back and forth battle against the Sun Devils. After surrendering a couple runs late and losing on a walk off groundout in game one, the Ducks bounced back and took the final two games of the weekend. Saturday’s win featured a three-run ninth inning comeback resulting in a 6-4 win, while Sunday saw a go-ahead grand slam in the middle innings on the way to an 8-5 victory. It was a strong showing to begin Pac-12 play for Oregon, who currently sit in second place in the conference.

Biggest Strength: Middle of the Order. Jeffery Heard and Jacob Walsh are two guys that you do not want to see at the plate as an opposing pitcher. Both work deep into counts and can bring thunder from the left side of the plate. Meanwhile, Drew Smith and Bennett Thompson are two productive right-handed bats that have both reached base at a high clip this season. The middle of the order is not an easy group to face and can put up a crooked number quickly.

Concern: Starting pitching. Veteran RJ Gordon has provided some stability as the Friday night guy, but there are plenty of question marks within the rotation following him. Four of the other five arms that have received starts have an ERA over 5.00 with three of them posting an ERA over 6.00. Along with struggling to keep opponents from crossing the plate, going deep into games has been an issue. The Ducks will need to find some stability within their rotation if they are going to make another deep postseason run.

Best Player: Jacob Walsh. The Ducks first baseman provides a veteran presence in the middle of the order that can help produce runs regularly. Walsh had an impressive showing throughout the series against Arizona State, recording at least one hit in every game and reaching base seven times. Both massive power and a strong hit tool were shown, as Walsh produced runs in a multitude of ways. The slugger can strike fear in opponents and can change a game with one swing of the bat.
