High School Notebook: May 16

Levi Clark (2024, Marietta, Ga.) put together an impressive two game stretch a few weeks back for Walton in their series sweep of Forsyth Central. The PG All-American hit a double in the first game and then followed it up with a single and a big time homer in game-two. He’s one of the more powerful players in the state and was on quite the tear before a small injury took him out of the lineup towards the end of the regular season. He picked up right where he left off with strong performances in the playoffs. He always hits and the power is off the charts. There have been some questions about where he will fit defensively at the next level but the hit tool and power continues to shine every time I see him. This one will be interesting to follow into the summer months with the MLB Draft coming up in a few months. 
 

One of the names that has caught a ton of buzz this spring, Alex Hernandez (2024, Cumming, Ga.) showcased the two-way ability that has gotten him on draft boards this spring for Forsyth Central. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound corner infielder/right-handed pitcher got the ball in a huge matchup and showed great pitchability. He sat in the upper-80s, getting up to 91 mph early on a couple times. He mixed in both a changeup with heavy fade and a breaking ball, both he could throw in any count. He also caught a barrel in the same game with a hard hit single to the pull-side. There’s supreme two-way upside here and he put up a strong spring doing both. Whether he gets drafted or makes it to the collegiate ranks, it wouldn’t shock me to see him shine doing both for a while. 
 

Tennessee commit Darrell McDowell (2025, Atlanta, Ga.) got the ball for Lassiter in a win or go home game against one of the state’s top lineups and threw the ball extremely well. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-hander ran the fastball up to 92 mph and sat comfortably in the 88-90 range with good carry through the zone. He mixed in a breaking ball that he’s developing feel for and flashed a splitter that showed flashes. The upside is immense with McDowell and we’ve seen it for quite some time. It’s extremely hard to square up when it’s in the zone coming from the high slot. He’s going to be a name that we monitor this summer and has a chance to make a huge jump in the rankings if the projection hits. 
 

Dane Moehler (2024, Marietta, Ga.) got the ball opposite Alex Hernandez in one of the bigger matchups of the entire year in the state. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander got into some trouble early on after a few defensive miscues but settled into the outing well and eventually got the win. The fastball worked in the 88-91 range and showed usual feel for his curveball and changeup. He really knows how to pitch and seems to flourish in big games, which he did once again in this one. He’s another name on the Walton roster that has been on the PG Draft Board this spring and whether he gets drafted or makes it to college is yet to be seen but the pitchability and big game trait makes me believe he’s going to be really good at the next level. 
 

Jackson Taylor (2025, Marietta, Ga.) came up with one of the bigger swings of the series for Walton in their sweep of Forsyth Central, blasting a three-run homer to the pull-side late in game-two. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound primary shortstop is one of the more projectable middle infielders in the state and the profile is really intriguing being a left-handed hitter. He has easy leverage and bat speed and seems to be tapping into the power already. Whether he can stick at shortstop or not remains to be seen but he’ll surely stick on the left-side whether that’s at shortstop or third base long term. He’s going to be a name we follow into the summer months and should be a name to get familiar with for next year. 
 

Miller Alston (2024, Marietta, Ga.) got the ball for Walton in their opening game against Forsyth Central and turned in a complete game gem. The 6-foot, 155-pound left-handed pitcher sat comfortably in the upper-80s with easy arm speed and mixed in a tight breaking ball late in counts. He’s a name that popped up last spring and has continued to turn in dominant performances ever since. There’s some two way intrigue as well with his ability to control the barrel and he runs well too. It wouldn’t shock me if a year from now we hear Alston making noise at Wofford on the mound. 
 

Landon Barr (2025, Dawsonville, Ga.) was one of the name’s that really stood out for Forsyth Central against Walton. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound middle infielder/outfielder set the table nicely, especially in the first game with multiple hits including a double off the middle of the left field wall. He handled the velocity of both arms well and showed good bat-to-ball skills and bat speed throughout the day. He was one of the major bright spots for the offense in the series and is an intriguing uncommitted player in the 2025 class.

Tyler Arnold (2024, Rancho Bernardo HS, CA) had a productive three-game series against Torrey Pines last week going 6-10 with a double, two home runs and drove in four with Rancho Bernardo taking two out of three.  In the final game of the set, Arnold had an early RBI base hit to the pull side to get the Broncos offense going.  He added an insurance run in a 3-2 game with a blast to left field in the 7th that stretched the lead to 4-2.  He closed it out on the mound in the bottom half with a 1,2,3 inning.  The third basemen is committed to Hawaii Pacific.



Levi Ham (2024, Maranatha Christian, CA) continued his solid Senior campaign by adding a couple of doubles in a matchup against La Jolla Country Day.  The big lefty is now hitting .459 with ten doubles, 8 home runs with 32 RBI. Levi also has nine appearances on the bump and carries a 1.06 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 26 innings, mostly coming out of the 'pen. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is heading to Point Loma Nazarene in the fall. 

Jack Circuit (2024, La Jolla Country Day, CA) can play all over the diamond at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, he has made starts at shortstop and catcher while making 7 appearances on the mound.  Hit a mammoth home run in a 3-2 win against Maranatha Christian while playing making multiple plays at short.  Made quick work in the 7th as he came in to close it out for the Torreys.  Athletic mover on the mound with a fastball that sat 87-88.  Jack will be heading to BYU in the fall


Grayson Boles (2025, St. Augustine HS, CA) was electric in his start against Madison going 5 1/3 without allowing a run and striking out 9, keeping hitters off balance throughout.  The fastball sat 88-91 and topped out at 92.  Showed off a big, firm breaking ball that had spin that exceeded 2900 RPM, with slurvy shape, sitting 79-80.  The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander has an MLB ready body with long arm action and a low effort delivery.  Located in all-four quadrants with ease and that was evident as he did not allow a free pass.  He is confident with the breaker and he will throw it in any count. Grayson is currently the 10th ranked right-handed pitcher in California for the class of 2025 and is committed to Texas.
