The 5 Star National 17u Black team is not new to the WWBA National Championship spotlight. The squad that competed competitively in 16u last summer walked away with the 2022 16u WWBA championship win and is here to defend their title at the 17u championships.

Returning a majority of their lineup, 5 Star can be optimistic about their run this week.

Myles Bailey, Tristan Bittle, Hunter Carns, Daniel Hernandez Ten, and James Nunnallee are among some of 5 Star's returners who are ready to fight for the coveted 2023 title.

Last July, in a 9-2 win over the Power Baseball 2024 Marucci team, after 13 hits and seven RBIs, 5 Star walked away with the title. It wasn't until the sixth and seventh innings that they got their offensive momentum going.

After a barrage of hits in the sixth, they were able to solidify their victory in the top of the seventh, courtesy of some wild pitches and RBI singles from BJ Gibson and Cooper McMullen. The squad was able to tack on four more runs and garnered the championship trophy on July 23, 2022.

They kicked off their 2023 WWBA run with a close game against the KBC 17u Prime team on Sunday. 5 Star attacked at the plate all afternoon, combining for eight hits and nine runs scored. In the bottom of the first, Bailey stepped up to the plate with two runners on and drilled a shot over the fence, scoring teammates Cade Brown and Nunnallee for a 3-run homer.

All week Bailey has continued to lead the 5 Star offense batting around .500 at the plate, collecting six hits and six RBIs.

The infielder from Tallahassee, Florida, is no rookie when it comes to Perfect Game’s highly scouted events. Just a week ago, Bailey could be found alongside other top players from the class of 2024 at the National Showcase in Phoenix, Arizona.

At the invitation-only event players were run through a variety of different drills. Outfield and infield defensive work, the 60-yard dash, batting practice, and competitive games were among some of the events that allowed players to highlight their tools.

After a 12-0, run rule win yesterday afternoon, Bailey and the 5 Star National Black team are now set to face the Toronto Mets 17u at the East Cobb Baseball Complex.

Currently ranked No. 3 in their pool, 5 Star will have to come out swinging this afternoon, in hopes of solidifying a spot in the Round of 96, starting on Friday.
