2014 Sunshine South Showcase

2014 Top Prospects

Zachary Garcia - RHP - 2014 - Cypress, TX
Garcia isn't a big athlete at 5-8/160 but he has lots of tools. He played all over the field on defense but looked best on the mound, where he topped out at 88 mph from a deceptive arm angle.

2015 Top Prospects

Ke'Bryan Hayes - 3B - 2015 - Tomball, TX
Hayes swung the bat as well as we've ever seen him swing it and looks geared for a big summer. He's very focused on hitting the ball hard to the gaps and gets excellent carry on his line drives, which makes us wonder what he would do if he really looked to lift the ball occasionally.

Johnny Rizer - OF - 2015 - Cypress, TX
Rizer was another player who showed tools all over the field. His batting practice was one of the top 5 at the showcase and he showed bat speed and power from the left side. The Louisiana-Lafayette commit also threw 91 mph from the outfield, ran a 6.9 sixty and even topped out at 86 mph from the mound with lots of polish.

Nate Fisbeck - SS - 2015 - The Woodlands, TX
Fisbeck is a quality two-way prospect with a loose, projectable body that is just beginning to get strong. His right handed swing has very good extension and present bat speed and he showed his power in game action. Fisbeck also threw up to 88 mph off the mound with big running life at times. He projects as a third baseman at the next level as a position player.

Colin Cameron - RHP - 2015 - The Woodlands, TX
Cameron was one of the events top pitching prospects, with a projectable 6-3/190 frame and lots of present stuff. He topped out at 89 mph with good running life on his fastball and and had a complete assortment of secondary pitches to go with it. Cameron also showed he was a quality athlete with some potential with the bat.

Elijah MacNamee - OF - 2015 - Cypress, TX
MacNamee has a projectable 6-2/180 build and lots of very solid tools that are just going to get better with additional strength. He threw 93 mph from the outfield and 85 mph from the mound, ran a 6.9 sixty, and showed some of the best bat speed at the event.

Tristan Metten - SS - 2015 - Lewisville, TX
Metten has a nice balance of tools, especially for a young player who looks like he's going to be able to stay in the middle infield on defense. He has a big throwing arm, runs well (6.8) and is strong enough to generate present bat speed. He's a verbal commit to Texas A&M.

Jonathon Law - RHP - 2015 - El Paso, TX
Law is a polished 6-0/190 right hander with three solid pitches he mixes well in an upper 80's fastball that topped out at 89 mph plus a curveball and change up. He should be a very successful college pitcher.

Tyler Mortenson - C - 2015 - Woodlands, TX
Mortenson is a 6-4/180 catcher who showed good athleticism behind the plate, especially for his height, but he may have a higher ceiling on the mound. He topped out at 88 mph on his fastball but his best pitch was a hard 76 mph curveball with bite and depth.

Tyler Hockenbury - C - 2015 - Santa Fe, TX
Hockenbury stood out on both sides of the ball with a loose, powerful right handed swing at the plate and a hose behind the plate that registered an event high 84 mph in drills.

Daniel Jones - OF - 2015 - Coppell, TX
The 6-1/185 Jones has very nice all around tools. He threw 90 mph from the outfield, ran a 6.88 sixty and had one of the loudest batting practices of the event.

Clayton Kopecky - SS - 2015 - Cypress, TX
Kopecky is a quality two way prospect who pretty much did everything during the showcase. He showed a plus Hit tool in batting practice, showed off his power potential with a game home run, ran a 6.8 sixty and topped out at 88 mph off the mound with a mid-70's breaking ball.

Eric Aldaco - 3B - 2015 - Boerne, TX
Aldaco still has to add some strength to his lean 6-4/190 build but he has lots of interesting tools that are worth being patient for. His right handed swing is geared for power and lift but he's also a good athlete who ran a 7.0 sixty and showed nice arm strength across the diamond.

Ryan Simon - RHP - 2015 - Round Rock, TX
Simon looks the prospect part at 6-2/190 and showed tools all over the board. He has a very fluid delivery and a three-pitch mix that includes a fastball that topped out at 87 mph. Simon also ran a 6.7 sixty and showed his left handed power in batting practice.

Donte Peters - 2B - 2015 - Columbia, MS
Peters is a 5-9/165 athlete with 6.8 speed that played up during the games and very good bat speed from an aggressive approach that produced hard contact and gap power in the games.

Kyle Swanson - C - 2015 - Montgomery, TX
Swanson lists his position as "Catcher/Utility" and he was right on the money as he played all over the field with skill and tools, including popping an event leading 1.80 during drills. He also ran a 6.80 sixty and showed a loose swing with developing bat speed.

Caleb Kyle - OF - 2015 - Frisco, TX
Kyle ran the fastest sixty of the event with a 6.63 but showed that he was more than just a runner with a short, crisp swing from the left side that opened eyes with a long game home run.

Grant Golson - OF - 2015 - Cypress, TX
Golson has a projectable build with some present strength and a short, crisp swing that has lots of bat speed and gap power. He drove the ball consistently all weekend and had a double and triple in one game. He also ran a 6.9 sixty.

Jesse Philp - LHP - 2015 - Lufkin, TX
Philp has a nice 6-3/200 pitcher's build with lots of present strength and room for more. He pitched steadily in the 84-86 mph range with a very nice change up and developing curveball. The left handed hitter also showed his power at the plate with a home run down the line in the games.

Weston Brown - RHP - 2015 - Cypress, TX
Brown had one of those games that everyone dreams of having. He was 84-87 mph on the mound with a very nice 76 mph slider to establish his credentials as a pitching prospect, then blasted a long home run to put an exclamation mark on his overall talent.

Jacob Vasquez - SS - 2015 - League City, TX
Vasquez has the defensive tools to play shortstop, including a big arm and good quickness. He also topped out at 87 mph on the mound.

Jacob Rodriguez - SS - 2015 - Spring, TX
Rodriguez is only 5-6/165 but has a very nice right handed swing with present bat speed, excellent extension and a surprising amount of pop in his bat. He profiles as an offensive second baseman at the college level.

Michael Dunlap - SS - 2015 - Edmond, OK
Dunlap is a live bodied middle infielder who should make a very good offensive second baseman at the college level. He plays hard and hits the ball hard from the right side.

Trent Franson - SS - 2015 - Houston, TX
Franson really showed well with the bat in the games, making consistent hard contact and just missing a home run when a drive went off the top of the wall. He packs plenty of strength on his 5-11/180 frame.

Daniel Priwin - OF - 2015 - Sugar Land, TX
Priwin is a very strong athlete at 6-0/190 and uses that strength well in his right handed swing. He also runs a 6.78 sixty and has a strong outfield arm.

Sam Wheatley - C - 2015 - Kingwood, TX
Wheatly is a polished receiver with good quickness and arm strength behind the plate. He has a high average offensive approach with quick, loose hands that produced consistent hard line drive contact to all fields.

Coby Roddy - RHP - 2015 - Orange, TX
We've seen Roddy up to 90 mph in the past and he topped out at 87 mph in Tomball. His best pitch is a mid to upper 70's curveball that has hard spin and biting action.

Nolan Glubke - RHP - 2015 - Spicewood, TX
Glubke has a loose and projectable 6-1/175 build and a polished approach on the mound. He threw his fastball to spots very well and topped out at 86 mph, while his out pitch was a mid-70's change up that had excellent sink and deception at times.

Austin Sheahan - 1B - 2015 - Frisco, TX
Sheahan is the type of prospect who you look up at in a few years and he's mashing in the middle of the order for a good college team. He's 6-4/210 but has a nice fundamental swing and the strength to drive the ball all over the field.

Blake Gould - LHP - 2015 - Kingwood, TX
Gould is a three-pitch left hander who has all the ingredients to be a successful college pitcher, with a smooth, easy delivery, a mid-80's fastball, a big downer curveball and a nice change up.

Sterling Motley - 1B - 2015 - Houston, TX
Motley is a bit of a project but enormously strong 6-4/230 athletes don't come around often who have long and loose whippy swings with bat speed. If he grows into his coordination and develops better balance at the plate for better contact, watch out.

2016 Top Prospects

Bailey Mullins - SS - 2016 - Humble, TX
Mullins is a polished all around player for his age with lots of present tools that are just going to keep getting better. We've seen him run and throw better than he did this weekend but his bat is really the tool that is going to play the highest and that was on display.

Charles Robinson - 3B - 2016 - Sugar Land, TX
Robinson stood out for his tools and for his versatility on defense, where he showed his athleticism and tools at four different positions, not including the mound where he topped out at 87 mph. He's a strong hitter from the right side as well.

Shawn Kelley - C - 2016 - Sweeny, TX
Kelly has a slender and young 6-1/150 build but lots of loose, quick twitch strength. He uses his lower half very well to help generate bat speed and has arm strength and a very quick release behind the plate. Kelly also topped out at 85 mph on the mound with lots of natural cutting action.

Jorge Gutierrez - SS - 2016 - Sugar Land, TX
Gutierrez is a very versatile young player with tools. He looked good both at shortstop and behind the plate on defense while running a 6.8 sixty. He's a switch-hitter who has a nice swing with bat speed from the right side in particular.

Cristian Gutierrez - SS - 2016 - Spring, TX
No relation to Jorge Gutierrez (above) but Christian is a nice prospect in his own right, with middle infield tools and speed (6.8 sixty) and a very promising right handed bat that will keep improving as he gets stronger.

Cody Erikson - SS - 2016 - Sweeny, TX
Sweeny High School had a number of very nice young players at the event and has an especially strong 2016 class. Erikson showed nice middle infield actions and the tools to stay at shortstop defensively. Like all the Sweeny players, he swung the bat aggressively with bat speed and some pop.

Marshall Skinner - C - 2016 - Cypress, TX
The 6-1/195 Skinner was a late add-on to the event but stood out. He slammed one of the longest home runs of batting practice with an aggressive pull oriented swing and looked solid behind the plate.

Zach Zubia - 1B - 2016 - Richmond, TX
Zubia is an extra large and strong young man with a 6-4/210 frame that looks even bigger. He has easy plus power when he gets his arm extended and squares up the ball. Zubia's arm strength is his second best tool and he topped out at 85 mph off the mound.

2017 Top Prospects

Ronald Washington - OF - 2017 - Houston, TX
Washington's power is pretty astounding for a young player just coming out of his freshman year. He put on a show in BP, launching numerous bombs, and hit a game home run as well. The power comes easily for him. And he's a very good athlete who ran a 6.8 sixty as well.

Taylor Morgan - RHP - 2017 - Missouri City, TX
Morgan is a very interesting young athlete with a potential elite level right arm. He threw 92 mph from the outfield and topped out at 87 mph on the mound with a mid-70's slider, all top level numbers for a rising sophomore. He also blasted a long home run in batting practice.

Will Heath - SS - 2017 - Monroe, LA
Heath has very good strength for a '17 at 6-0/180 and generates plenty of present bat speed from the right side of the plate. He also run under 7.0 in the sixty and showed a strong arm for his age.

Marcos Castillo - SS - 2017 - Round Rock, TX
Castillo has some growing and strengthening to do but he has loose athletic actions both offensively and defensively and projects very well across the board.

Jonathan Windham - 3B - 2017 - Spring, TX
Windham has a very projectable 6-2/170 build that is should really fill out nicely as he gets older. He showed a nice power approach at the plate with some present bat speed and plenty of lift in his swing.

2018 Top Prospects

Cade Pollard - 3B - 2018 - Fair Oaks Ranch, TX
Pollard is just leaving the 8th grade but he's extremely strong for his age and has an aggressive left handed swing that could really develop over the next four years as he matures.
