Saturday Recap: Georgia Tech claims series

A fun weekend of college baseball wrapped up with the Easter holiday and saw some significant steps, both forward and back, by a handful of teams. Miami made a big jump in the Top 10, taking over the third spot in the rankings with a sweep over Clemson and a 4-0 week overall. South Carolina enjoyed an even bigger jump, moving up 11 spots after sweeping Ole Miss – their second SEC series sweep in as many weekends – as the Rebels drop five spots in the rankings but still hold an impressive 20-5 record and overall early season resume.

No. 1 Florida did lose their weekend series to Kentucky, and while rankings logistics may normally dictate that Texas A&M should move up to the top spot, we still strongly believe that the Gators have the best college baseball team in the country. After all, they're 23-3 (better than any team other than South Carolina), they did win their midweek contest against Florida Atlantic last Tuesday and overall have faced a fairly formidable schedule so far this season.

And to put this in a much more simple way, next weekend the Aggies have the opportunity to take things into their own hands as they travel to Gainesville to take on the Gators. The top spot is unquestionably theirs with a series win on the road.

The Perfect Game college staff agree there were six teams in the running for the one open spot created when previously 24th-ranked Oregon went 2-2 on the week: BYU, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Tech, Long Beach State, Missouri State and UC Santa Barbara. Southern Miss was also considered, with Kentucky and Michigan State also in the discussion, but the other six teams were the ones bantered about the most.

Georgia Tech got the nod since they of course took two of three from previously fifth-ranked North Carolina. Overall it was agreed that any team ranked in the 17-35 range (if we ranked teams that high) would be largely interchangeable.

Tune in to Perfect Game College Baseball from 9-11 p.m. EST on SiriusXM College Sports Nation, channel 84. Perfect Game's Mike Rooney and SiriusXM's Braden Gall will wrap up the weekend while taking a look at the week ahead.
