2020 National Underclass West (01/11/2020 - 01/12/2020)

Saturday Batting Practice Highlights
1/12/2020 11:42:24 AM

Special recognition goes out to Perfect Game's batting practice pitcher, Steve Dollas, who threw all 15 teams of the combined three showcase event on Saturday.  He even said he could probably throw a few more teams on Sunday if we'd had more BP.  It's believed to be the first time in PG showcase history that a BP pitcher has thrown to 15 teams in one day and he was nails from the first team to the last.

Jacob Sullens (2022 OF, Keller, TX) is an excellent all around athlete and that athleticism extended to the plate as well.  The right handed hitter has present bat speed from a short and quick swing and power to the left centerfield gap.

Braden Montgomery (2021 OF, Madison, MS) is a switch-hitter with a short and quick contact swing from the left side but a much fuller and faster right handed swing that really shows his athleticism and strength well.

Will Plattner (2022 C, Chatham, IL) has a sound fundamental swing with a good lower half shift into contact from a tall start and a loose and fluid swing with some present bat speed and the projection for plenty more.

Ethan Hunt (2021 C, Queen Creek, AZ) is a big and strong 6-3/225 right handed hitter with a pull side approach and can put a charge into the ball.  His swing can get long at times but he's going to run into some balls and do some damage.

Tony Pluta (2022 C, Palatine, IL) had the best fundamental "pro style" swing at the showcase and was very fluid and well synced up while also swinging with intent.  When he adds some mature muscle to his 5-7/150 build he's really going to blossom as a hitter.

Dillon Roberts (2023 3B, Cave Creek, AZ) is very strong for a freshman and has serious power potential in his left handed bat.  He swings with unmistakable intent and can drive the ball hard when he's on time and gets the barrel turned.

Masen Schechterle (2021 3B, Phoenix, AZ) has a mature and well refined swing that is both simple and creates some bat speed.  A bit more strength on his 6-0/165 frame could add lots more bat speed.

Ben Cleary (2023 SS, Half Moon Bay, CA) had one of the most accurate barrels we saw all day, squaring up almost every ball with a short swing that featured very good hand quickness and solid lower half use.

Samuel Brewer (2021 OF, Chula Vista, CA) has present strength in his 6-1/190 build and lots of raw bat speed to go with it.  He hits the ball out front with a loose and fluid swing and showed plenty of pull power potential.

Benjamin Watson (2022 1B, Gilbert, AZ) is a projectable young left handed hitter with present bat speed and a pull line drive approach.  He swings with the kind of aggressiveness and intent we like to see on strong and physical hitters.

Derek Schaefer (2023 C, Cave Creek, AZ) has present hand quickness and the ability to square up the ball with consistent mid field to pull side line drive contact.  The 6-0/150 right handed hitter will definitely keep improving as he adds strength and physical maturity.

Adrien Martin (2022 3B, Albuquerque, NM) has a fluid left handed swing with a nice back side to front side shift that left him well timed and ready to use his strength to drive the ball.  He's a New Mexico commit with a very bright hitting future.

Corey Guevara (2021 OF, San Pedro, CA) is another player with "hitter's hands" that are quick and flexible with some hidden strength in them to drive the ball to the gaps.  He'll keep improving as he adds strength to his slender 6-2/165 frame.

Justin Smith (2021 RHP, Las Vegas, NV) has a 6-3/195 build that stands out and that strength and leverage makes the ball come off his barrel easy and hard.

Bryson Hoier (2022 OF, Paso Robles, CA) is very strong for a sophomore while still looking very projectable at 6-1/175.  He's a very aggressive right handed hitter who attacks the ball from the right handed batter's box.

Caiden Huber (2021 3B, Yucaipa, CA) is another tall and projectable young hitter at 6-3/185.  He creates big left handed bat speed with some serious barrel whip at times and is a Southern California commit.

Aaron Oropeza (2021 C, El Paso, TX) has excellent rhythm and timing in his right handed swing and squared the ball up from the first pitch to the last.  He has quick hands and consistently turned on the ball hard for pull line drive contact.

Tyler McCuistion (2021 SS, Rocklin, CA) is a young Long Beach State commit with a lifting swing that shows present bat speed and lots of power potential down the road.
