2018 West Coast Prospect Showcase

Day 2 Batting Practice Highlights
8/19/2018 8:43:02 PM

John Paul Avila (2021 SS, San Carlos, CA) took a steady round of BP for the Black team, shows looseness to his swing with a short, direct path to the ball. He can continue to incorporate additional lower half into his swing moving forward but already shows a feel for the barrel and comfort working the pull side.

Justin Holguin (2019 1B, Anaheim, CA) is a strongly built 6-3/210 lefthanded bat who does a nice job of incorporating his physical strength as he uncoils into contact. With a shorter stroke for somebody his build, Holguin exhibited looseness to his hands and nice carry off the barrel, especially to his pull side.

Billy Rice (2021 SS, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) is a very interesting rising sophomore who took one of the more consistent rounds of the day. An uncommitted lefthanded hitting infielder, Rice showed a natural feel for the barrel with both rhythm and timing to his swing and connected for lots of contact out front at extension.

Peter Dufau (2019 OF, Camarillo, CA) continued to have a nice showcase and put together a nice round once he got comfortable in the box. While he has a big leg lift that leads to him getting wide at times, there’s plenty of strength to his hands and leverage to his swing path, connecting for a few well struck balls which included a home run.

James Park (2019 C, Manhattan Beach, CA) has a well-built 6-2/195 build and the uncommitted catcher showed off a simple, repeatable swing from the right side. There’s plenty of present jump off his barrel as he does a nice job of getting extended and separated at the point of contact.

Justin Baldwin (2020 1B, Los Angeles, CA) showed present tools in the box and a skill set that will only continue to develop moving forward. A lefthanded hitter, Baldwin showed quick and loose hands which help whip the barrel through the zone with occasional separation out front.

Kainoa Williams (2021 SS, San Diego, CA) put a short, compact swing on display with which he was able to find the barrel often. Still projecting physically, Williams shows present quickness to his hands and extension out front, spraying line drive contact all over the field.

Henry Goodier (2019 C, Chadds Ford, PA) made the trip out from Pennsylvania and brought a loud righthanded swing with him. A precursor to his game swings, Goodier showed a short swing with extension out front and was able to impact the baseball well, like he did with a home run to left field.

Ethan Hagen (2019 3B, Santa Clarita, CA) does a nice job of creating torque with his righthanded swing and got more comfortable with each pitch during his round. With natural lift to his swing Hagen was able to create backspin at the point of contact with a full path through the zone.

Hudson La Barbera (2019 1B, Menifee, CA) was the last bat to go during batting practice and he took arguable the loudest round, blasting a couple of home runs during his round that left in a hurry. There’s lots of strength in his hands and he did a nice job of getting extended out front, impact the baseball hard to his pull side.
