15u Northeast Scout Notes

Andrew Snyder

Kenny Maldonado (2021, Bronx, N.Y.), a 5-foot-11, 170-pound outfielder, had a big weekend offensively for the NY Gothams 15u (22). A righthanded hitter, he has an upright and slightly open stance that uses a small, slow leg lift for his trigger. Maldonado has an aggressive approach with intention behind every swing he takes, generating bat speed while showing the ability to square up fastballs consistently. As he fills out his medium frame and adds strength, more power will come and the gap-to-gap line drives will start to leave the yard.

Troy Hunt (2021, Watervliet, N.Y.), a 5-foot-8, 150-pound catcher, proved to be a game changer behind the plate for Titans Elite, neutralizing the running game. While he has a young body and is still developing arm strength, Hunt’s release and accuracy are well beyond his years. He handles the pitching staff well and shows a plus skill set behind the plate with both receiving and blocking. Offensively he was 6-for-17 with a double, a home run and seven RBIs in six games. Hunt will be an interesting player to watch as his body develops with added strength.

Jamie Bobigan (2022, New York, N.Y.), a 5-foot-10, 160-pound catcher and outfielder, had a good weekend for the eventual champions, NY Gothams 15u (22). At the plate he finished 9-for-20 with three doubles, a triple, and a homerun with five RBIs while scoring seven runs. Bobigan has a medium frame with a young build that has plenty of room to add strength. He is a righthanded hitter with a wide base, and uses a small leg kick as his load as he pushes his hands towards his body. Behind the plate Bobigan has good hands and feet to go along with a quick release and good throwing accuracy. As he fills out, Bobigan should be a good catch and throw guy with gap-to-gap power.

Alexander Rosario (2021, Astoria, N.Y.), a 6-foot, 170-pound infielder and righthanded pitcher, was named co-Most Valuable Pitcher for his work on the mound. Rosario earned two wins in two outings, the second coming in the semifinal game Monday against the Titans Elite. In the win Rosario threw a two-hit shutout while striking out eight. Rosario worked from the stretch with a high leg kick and high handset, showing a short and clean arm circle. Rosario worked in the low-80s with a heavy fastball and mixed in a 11-to-5 sharp curveball with good spin and late depth.

Joseph Mirabile (2021, Loudonville, N.Y.), a 6-foot, 170-pound lefthanded pitcher and first baseman, got the nod on the mound for the South Troy Dodgers in the semifinal Monday. Pitching six innings of one-hit baseball, Mirabile was outstanding, establishing both sides of the plate with his fastball that sat in the high-70s. He has a slow and deliberate motion with a high leg kick and vertical hand break, giving him a shallow, quick arm circle.  Although he only had one official at-bat in the semifinal, Mirabile showed some offensive skills throughout the event, finishing 6-for-19 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs.

John Rizzo (2021, Islip Terrace, N.Y.), a 5-foot-10, 160-pound righthanded pitcher, received co-Most Valuable Pitcher honors for his three-hit shutout performance in the semifinal game on Monday. Rizzo has a funky delivery, throwing across his body with long, smooth arm action from a low three-quarters arm slot. Rizzo uses his lower half well to create drive towards home plate. His fastball has big arm side run, sitting in the high-70s Monday and topping out at 81 mph in an earlier relief outing for the weekend. Rizzo pitches off his fastball, mixing in a breaking ball that profiles as a slurve-type pitch given his arm slot.
