'Bama back on the map

Kendall Rogers

There's usually no such thing as flying under the radar when it comes to the University of Alabama, but don't tell that to Crimson Tide baseball coach Mitch Gaspard.

Between the glitz and glamour of Nick Saban's football program, and the overall Southeastern Conference brand, the name "Alabama" is one that typically resonates from the shores of California all the way to New York City.

But at least for the Crimson Tide baseball team, things are different this season. Alabama, despite being sixth in the SEC, only a couple of games out of third place in the conference, and being in good shape to make the NCAA postseason with an RPI of 31 heading down the stretch, enters the final few weeks of the regular season as a relative unknown to some.

Gaspard admits he's a little surprised at the lack of attention for the Crimson Tide, but it's a situation his team has embraced and prospered through so far this season.

"We kind of like where we are on the national stage right now. I think when we started the year, there weren't too many expectations about this team, because everyone knew we were going to play a lot of young guys," Gaspard said. "But I'll say this, this team has been pretty consistent throughout the year, and though we've had a few roadblocks, the young players have just continued to improve as the season has progressed."
