Mazey's magical touch

West Virginia's Randy Mazey sure is making the best of his second chance to be a head coach. He's even working in a few magic tricks.

At least that's what it looks like at this point in the season, as the Mountaineers, who were picked by everyone to finish dead last in the Big 12 Conference, actually enter the final few weeks of the regular season at least in the postseason discussion with a third-place standing in the league, and a very solid 27-18 overall record. Pretty impressive to ponder when you factor in WVU hasn't reached the NCAA postseason since 1996.

"I thought we had a chance to have a pretty good offense, but I thought our pitching was going to be weak going into the season," Mazey said. "And yes, had you told me we'd be where we are today in the fall, I would've thought you were crazy. We've been kind of fortunate that some offenses haven't risen to the occasion so far this spring."

The Mountaineers still have a tough schedule to finish the regular season, with series coming up against Oklahoma and TCU, both at home, and on the road against Oklahoma State. But the story of this program, and Mazey in particular, is something already made for television.
