The inaugural Bo Jackson 5-Tool Championship, taped last October in Florida, is scheduled to be broadcast on FOX Sports, Comcast and other television stations around the country this weekend, with the first airings set for Friday (June 4).
The full television schedule for the 30-minute show is listed at the end of this story.
Wagner Mateo, a power-hitting outfielder from the Dominican Republic, won the event with an impressive display in all five categories – Hitting, Hitting for Power, Fielding, Throwing and Running. Mateo, 17, signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks this spring for $512,000.
The Bo Jackson 5-Tool Championship was held at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., on Oct. 24, 2009 in conjunction with the World Wood Bat Association finals. Jackson, one of the best 5-tool players in baseball history, owns the Bo Jackson Elite Sports company in the Chicago suburbs, and the 5-Tool Championship was a joint venture of his company, Perfect Game USA and Nike.
There were 32 contestants in the event, including 19 players who were named Aflac All-Americans in 2009.
“There was a lot of talent out there,” said Jackson, who served as one of the judges. “At the rate these guys are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if I see half of them in the big leagues in five or six years.”
Kevin Jordan, from Columbus, Ga., won the Power Hitting contest in the event with six home runs. Mitchell Shifflett, of Midlothian, Va., won the 60-yard dash. Eric Arce, of Marietta, Ga., won the Hitting Competition; Kaleb Cowart, of Adel, Ga., won the Throwing competition with a 100 mph missile from right field; and Chevez Clarke, of Marietta, Ga., won the Fielding competition.
Mateo did not win any of the individual events, but he had the best composite score for the five events combined.
Former major league players Chet Lemon, Carl Everett, John Cangelosi and Dwight Smith joined Jackson as judges.
