Team Sheet: Texas State

Breakdown: In one of the more anticipated Sun Belt series in recent history Texas State took down then ranked Southern Mississippi with a 2-1 series win as they came back after dropping game one to pick up a 3-2 in on Saturday followed by an 8-5 win in the finale to clinch their first Sun Belt series win on the season. After having to use a spot start in place of Zeke Woods on Friday night, the Bobcats were able to turn to Levi Wells for some solid length on Saturday before the offense was able to put up some numbers on Sunday in support of Nathan Medrano and the bullpen. 

On the mound, while Texas State was without their typical Friday night starter Zeke Woods, they were still able to get some quality innings in each of the three games headlined by Levi Wells’ six innings, two runs, and ten strikeouts on Saturday. Out of the bullpen Jack Stroud was big in relief with 2.2 innings of relief in the one run game two on Saturday while Triston Dixon made two appearances including 2.2 innings on Sunday to hold the lead through the middle innings after coming in, in relief of Carson Keithley who also was called on twice in the series. In the other two starting roles, bookend of Wells’ Saturday start, Cameron Bush on Friday night and Nathan Medrano on Sunday were also able to give their club effective innings to keep them in games and save some of the bullpen arms for the Bobcats. 



At the plate the Texas State offensive was very opportunistic in their two wins as most of the damage came from two players in the lineup. Jose Gonzalez and his ability to wear out the opposite field on fastballs was crucial as he provided why he is trusted in the middle of the order hitting out of the three hole with three hits and two runs driven in. Freshman Chase Mora was truly the nucleus of the offense as he played a crucial role deeper in the order with four hits on the weekend and six runs driven in. Mora has been a guy who since he returned full time to the lineup from an injury has been a huge spark for the offense and slowly started to climb his way up the batting order as he hit fifth on Sunday in a 3-for-4 performance with four runs driven in. 

Best Player: On the mound the Bobcats top draft prospect, junior right-hander Levi Wells was outstanding in a big Saturday win as he picked up six innings with 10 strikeouts. After allowing a run in the first Wells bounced back allowing just one more run over the next five innings as he settled in and really found a groove with his fastball, cutter combination. The fastball was down a tick from where it can be with the cold weather from the weekend but still topped out at 93 mph and lived at 90-91 mph throughout. The cutter became a true weapon in the mid 80’s with sharp darting life away from right-handed hitters as a swing and miss pitch. To the lefties Wells stuck primarily with his fastball and a changeup that showed flashes with good depth and fading action. 

Offensively Chase Mora was without a doubt the most impressive and dangerous bat in the Bobcats lineup. The freshman second baseman was 4-for-10 in the three game stretch with two doubles and a home run to drive in four runs. The young middle infielder shows quick hands at the plate with a knack for finding the barrel at a high rate as he really did most of his damage in the middle of the field and the other way, letting the ball get deep in the zone and trusting his hands to get the barrel where it needs to be to create hard contact. He is able to pick up his extra base hits when he finds gaps with that hard contact or clips the ball with enough back spin to create the carry that has produced his eight home runs on the season.
