PG Invitational SE Qualifier #2 Scout Notes

This weekend’s 14u Major MVP recipient, Jackson Freeman (2025, Flowery Branch, Ga.), is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound, catcher, corner infielder, and right-handed pitcher who plays for Devine Baseball 14u. Freeman was impressive all weekend at the plate, hitting an astronomical .643 with three extra-base hits and 12 RBI. Freeman also fueled Devine’s championship run, topping the daily batting top performers list Sunday during bracket play, while hitting .857 with two doubles, eight RBI, and five walks. To further illustrate how dominant Freeman was Sunday, Jackson would reach base in the first 11 of his 12 at-bats, before flying out to center field in the top of the seventh of the championship bout late Sunday afternoon. At the plate, Freeman stays short and through the ball, with advanced hand-eye coordination and barrel control for just 14 years old. With advanced size and strength to his current frame, Freeman caught all three games on Sunday, and uses his keen athletic ability to receive well with quiet actions and a strong wrist to stick pitches in the strike zone. Seen at East Cobb this weekend, Freeman is a leader on the field and works well with his pitching staff, which adds to their effectiveness and gives Freeman tremendous value to his team. Freeman’s hot weekend at the plate has been the status quo this spring as he has his average up near .500 through his club’s first 18 games, and Perfect Game lifetime average up over .400 after 63 games dating back to the 2017 tournament season.  

Noah Sheffield (2024, Tampa, Fla.) is a 5-foot-8, 150-pound shortstop, outfielder, and right-handed pitcher from Tampa Preparatory in his hometown. A freshman this spring, Sheffield showcases ability all over the field, regularly hitting in the three-hole for his club, Florida Heat Baseball 14u. Noah would leave the Atlanta area this weekend with MV-Pitcher honors after his excellent pitching performance during the Heat’s quarterfinal, time-shortened, six-inning victory. During the affair, Noah went the distance pitching six innings, scattering three hits, two runs, and striking out six, needing 79 pitches to complete his assignment. On the mound, Noah deploys a full windup from the third base side of the rubber. He has a slow, even tempo to his mechanically-sound delivery which he releases out front from a high-three-quarters slot. Sheffield navigated the East Cobb Pirates 14u Black’s lineup with ease, mixing his three-pitch mix of a fastball, high of 80 mph, with life and run, a curveball with a lot of depth and bottom in the low-60s, and a changeup he used sparingly in the low-70s to add to his effectiveness. Sheffield would pound the zone throughout his start, filling the strike zone at a 68 percent clip, while also working ahead of nearly 70 percent of the batters he faced. When he would surrender contact, Sheffield’s control worked to his advantage as he wasn’t hit hard, allowing his defense to handle the hits with ease. Noah would also hit in the three-hole for the Heat this weekend and end the tournament with a .333 average, three extra-base hits, five walks, five runs, four stolen bases and eight RBI. A good athlete all over the field, Sheffield currently ranks inside the top-300 nationally in the 2024 class. 
 

Hitting in front of the aforementioned Sheffield in the Florida Heat 14u’s lineup, Dominic Woodward (2025, Tampa, Fla.) had his hit tool on display all weekend long in Atlanta this weekend, ending with a .588 average with 10 hits, five for extra bases, nine RBI, and three stolen bases. At the plate, Woodward uses his tall, lean frame to generate a lot of pop to the gaps with quick hands and feel for the barrel. A good athlete, Woodward gets out of the box well and runs the bases with aggression and acumen, regularly moving himself into scoring position. A solid defender, Woodward displays comfortability in a number of positions which helps the versatility of the Heat’s lineup. Seen on Saturday during their pool play game at Aviation Park, Woodward worked well in the infield with anticipation, first-step quickness, and feel for the leather. He makes all plays out front and pairs his actions with clean, accurate throws to bases with carry. Dominic would also appear on the mound this weekend and run his fastball up to 79 mph, complementing it well with a curveball in the mid-60s. A highly-ranked amateur talent, Woodward currently stands as the No. 10 shortstop in his home state, and inside the top-40 in his graduating class.
