Kernels Championship Scout Notes: Day 1

Continuing on what’s been a very good fall for him, Vincent Trapani (2021, Eau Claire, Wisc.) had another dominant outing on Saturday morning for GRB, striking out 7 over 4 innings allowing just one hit in the process. Trapani generated 20 whiffs in this outing, an absurd number considering he threw just 62 pitches, pounding the strike zone ruthlessly and daring hitters to square up his fastball. He grabbed a few 92’s early and settled into the 88-91 mph range, hammering both edges of the strike zone and getting swings and misses up in the zone with the fastball as well. His curveball was fine in this outing, not quite to the level of previous looks but still showing sharp, late bite with good snap and mostly vertical shape, though the consistency wasn’t quite there on a chilly early morning in eastern Iowa. There’s a lot to like about Trapani’s ability to pound the strike zone out of a delivery that is unique and deceptive, and as the breaking ball consistency comes along there exists a big bat-missing future here.
