3 crowned PG Elite champions

Chain Gang’s perfect weekend ends with Freshman crown

MARIETTA, Ga. – After falling in the semifinal at the 2019 PG Freshman Fall Season Opener two weeks ago, Chain Gang 15u National got back to their winning ways this weekend. On Sunday they captured the PG Elite Freshman Championship crown outscoring South Charlotte Braves 15u Oliver 10-2 at Aviation Park in Marietta.

Chain Gang was able to keep the South Charlotte Braves off the board in the bottom of the first and that was all the boost they would need. They put up three in their half of the first, two in the second and three more in the third to jump out to an 8-1 lead in the early going.

South Charlotte Braves 15u Oliver would add a run in the fourth, but to no avail as they wouldn’t be able to stop the strong offensive surge of Chain Gang 15u National who would add two more in the bottom of the fifth to complete the mercy-ruled victory.

The top of the order for Chain Gang 15u National crossed the plate a total of seven times, with leadoff hitter, and tournament MVP, William Hampton going 1-for-2 in the championship game, scoring three times. Dylan Lewis and Josh Gates scored twice each.

In addition to pitching his club to the title game with a 4 1/3-inning, seven strikeout performance in the semifinal Sunday morning at Kell High School, Hampton also led the charge from the leadoff spot all weekend hitting .545 with three singles and three doubles, four walks, six runs scored and an RBI. Hampton was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in addition to his three runs scored in the championship bout which would help him take home tournament MVP honors.

River North took home the MV-Pitcher award thanks to his six-inning, 11-strikeout performance Friday night during pool play.

Chain Gang 15u National outscored opponents 23-7, continuing their already impressive start to the fall tournament season.

643 DP wins thriller to take Underclass title

MARIETTA, Ga. – 643 DP Sterling/Mang entered the playoffs at the PG Elite Underclass Championship as the No. 3 seed, out-scoring their two pool play opponents 20-2. They would eventually remain unbeaten, but it took three hard-fought baseball games to come out on top. In those three playoff games Sunday, 643 won by a combined four runs, with two of those games being one-run games, finishing things off with an eventual 6-5 victory over Team Elite 2021 Black in the championship game.

The championship game ended up going 11 innings of thrilling baseball. The game was tied 2-2 going into the seventh and would go into extra innings. After no runs scored in innings 6-9, the game erupted in the 10th. Three runs were scored by each team as Team Elite 2021 Black’s Jalen Fulwood would go on to knock in three runs in the top of the 10thwith a double. At that point in time it appeared Team Elite 2021 Black had the game, and the event’s championship, wrapped up.

Little did they know 643 DP Sterling/Meng had an answer of their own. Will Tippett would go on to double and knock in two runs before 643 pushed in one more to tie the game up. The game would go on to the 11thtied 5-5. Team Elite was unable to scored in the top of the 11th and 643 DP Sterling/Mang pushed across the winning, walk-off run on a walk to be named the 2019 PG Elite Underclass Champions.

During the semifinals Carter Davies got the call for 643 and would go on to toss 4 1/3 innings of brilliant baseball. He struck out four batters while only giving up only two hits. Offensively, 643 was led by Andruw Jones, who knocked in what turned out to be the winning run as he hammered a double into the gap.

In quarterfinal action Trent Ringer got the call for the Dirtbags and he provided a complete seven-inning game while striking out seven batters and only giving up three hits in a 2-0 win over Team Elite 2021 White. Even more impressively, he did not walk a single batter as he picked up the win to help push his team deeper into the playoffs and was named the Most Valuable Pitcher as a result of his performance.

Everett Cooper proved to be a bright spot for Team Elite 2021 Black earning event MVP honors. Cooper had a very impressive weekend batting over .530 with seven runs scored, six RBI, and seven stolen bases in just six games played.

Dirtbags emerge as Upperclass champs

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Dirtbags, who entered the playoffs undefeated but only as the No. 4 seed, would ultimately go on to win the 2019 PG Elite Upperclass Championship on Sunday. They won three games in a row in bracket play in order to do so, capping things off with an 8-2 win over Team Elite 2020 Black in the title game.

Ben Sieracki got the start for the Dirtbags I the championship game and picked up the win. He went five innings and racked up three stirkeouts as the Elon commit pushed his team to the trophy.

Garret Chandler went 2-for-3 with a couple doubles as he knocked in a run and scored one himself. Jack Hicks also had a multiple hit game as he went 3-for-4, scoring a run and driving one in. Josh Moylan would be a key point on the offensive side of the ball as he hammered baseballs all weekend including a towering shot over the center field fence.

The Dirtbags jumped on Team Elite early scoring two in the second inning and another in the third while Team Elite answered back scoring two themselves in between. The game would go into the seventh inning as just a one-run ball game before the Dirtbags scored five runs in the top of the seventh, putting the game out of reach.

During the semifinals, the Dirtbags took on the No. 1 seed East Cobb Prime 17u Zilleox. In stepped one Noah Overton who pitched a gem. The lefthanded uncommitted pitcher got it going early, going on to strike out seven batters in his six innings pitched as he ran his fastball up to 90 mph early in his start. He would eventually push them to a tight 4-3 win and into the championship game.

Moylan, an East Carolina commit currently ranked 114th overall in the class of 2020, was named the event’s Most Valuable Player. He hit a double and a home run among his five total hits with three runs scored and five RBI for the 5-0 Dirtbags.

Pitching for Team Elite, another highly-ranked prospect, Nate Wohlgemuth, was named Most Valuble Pitcher after a dominant pool play performance on Saturday. The Arkansas commit struck out 12 in 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and a pair of walks in an eventual 5-0 win to open the tournament.
