Team Steel Gold Wins 14u NE

Andrew Snyder

In what proved to be an exhilarating game of baseball, Team Steel Gold defeated Team Beast United on a walk-off RBI off the bat of Taj Farmer, pushing them to a 5-4 victory at Baseball Heaven in Long Island, N.Y. In what proved to be an exciting game from the first inning to the final out, both teams showed immense talent and grit in the last game of the 2019 15u WWBA Northeast National Championship.

Taj Farmer shined on both sides of the ball, tossing 3 2/3 innings in relief of James Asmus. Farmer impacted the offense of Team Steel with an RBI double in the third inning to aid an early outburst.

James Asmus shined on the mound early, throwing three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only one hit while striking out four.

For Team Beast United, James Griffin made is mark on the championship and on the tournament overall. The Co-MVP of the tournament was forced to exit early on the mound after struggling with fatigue, only to return in the top of the seventh to hit a game-tying homerun.

Mason Butash was excellent as a two-way threat, going 3 for 4 with a double. Butash contributed 4.1 innings of relief work on the bump, allowing three hits while also striking out three.

After a scoreless first, Team Steel Gold stuck first, putting two runs across in the bottom of the second. A single by Joe Richetti and an Anthony Scarabino walk started off the frame, followed by a passed ball that created a second-and-third situation with only one out. Vinny Napolitano capitalized, recording a 2RBI groundout to put Team Steel Gold 2-0 heading into the third.

Team Steel Gold tacked on another run in the bottom of the third off a Taj Farmer double that nearly cleared the left field wall. Team Beast United continued to struggle with the bats, garnering only hit through four innings.

After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the sixth seemed to awaken Team Steel Gold, who pushed their lead to four after a lead-off walk to James Asmus proved costly, as he came around to score on a wild pitch.

Team Beast United found their stride on offense in the top half of the seventh, as three of the first four hitters got on base. With two runs scored already in the inning, James Griffin entered the game after being taken out in the third only to hit a towering homerun to left field, knotting the game at four.

Team Steel Gold did not panic, however. Evan Baschnagel began the inning with a single, and after a fielder’s choice and walk Taj Farmer stepped to the dish with a runner in scoring position. Farmer proceeded to hit hard ground ball to shortstop, and Baschnagel beat the throw to secure a 5-4 championship victory.
