Florida Super Qualifier Notes


After waiting through a rain and lightning delay, Nelson Smith (2019, Lehigh Acres, Fla.) came out firing for Canes Baseball 16u. Smith attacked Mets Scout - Marucci with a fastball/changeup combo through five innings of work. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound righthander sat 81-85 mph with his fastball, and his changeup – which he isn’t afraid to use in any count – hovered 72-74 mph. Smith works at a controlled pace, establishing his own rhythm to the game. He struck out six batters in five innings, picking up the win.

The opposing pitcher for Mets Scout - Marucci, was Dillon Moran (2019, Jensen Beach, Fla.) who stands 6-foot-5, 218-pounds, with a strong, durable frame. Moran’s fastball ranged 81-86 mph with good downward angle when he got on top of the ball. He mixed in a 66-69 mph curveball with 11-to-5 movement that can miss bats, as the righthander struck out five batters in four innings of work.

Ripping a triple in his first at bat of the game against Diamond Prospects 16u, Marcus Brodil (2021, Clearwater, Fla.) showed good bat speed and the ability to turn on the baseball. On an elevated fastball on the inner half of the plate, the lefthanded hitting Brodil pulled his hands in and drove in the first run of the ballgame. He has a lean, athletic frame that will fill out and plays right field.

Center fielder Christian Hermosilla (2020, Miami Beach, Fla.) is another toolsy outfielder. Hermosilla singled in a run in his first at bat and scored a run in the ballgame. He keeps his swing compact and has a two-hand finish. Standing 6-foot-2, 170-pounds, he has long limbs and will continue to fill out physically.

A teammate of Hermosilla for Diamond Prospects 16u, Jorge Blanco (2020, Miami, Fla.), is an imposing, 6-foot-4, 215-pound catcher. Defensively, Blanco has solid receiving skills and good baseball instincts. He also shows good fundamentals while blocking pitches in the dirt. At the plate, Blanco creates good pre-pitch rhythm with his hands and has a quiet lower body. He is a guy who looks to impact the baseball and should hit for power. Against SBO 17u, Blanco ripped a double, walked and scored twice.

Earning the win for Mets Scout - Marucci was Liam Felix (2019, Ft. Pierce, Fla.), who stands 6-foot-1, 245-pounds. The righthander created deception in his delivery with a slight body turn, showing his numbers on the back of his jersey to the batter, thus hiding the ball. His fastball was 82-86 mph with a 70-73 mph curveball. He went six innings, giving up just one earned run and had eight strikeouts.

Working seven innings, shutting out Canes Baseball 16u was Mario Doble (2020, Miami Lakes, Fla.) for Panama Mutiny Legends. Doble’s fastball was 85-89 mph which he used to generate a ton of swing and misses. He also worked in a slider at 78-81 mph. Standing 6-foot-5, 178-pounds, Doble has an athletic, projectable body type that should be able to generate more velocity as he matures. In his seven innings of work, he collected 12 strikeouts, allowing just one walk and three hits.

Doble’s counterpart – who was equally good – Kelle Grau (2019, Fort Myers, Fla.), sat 80-84 mph. Grau showed a strong feel for his 11-to-5 curveball in the 71-73 mph range. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a high leg kick. Grau fields his position well, having multiple comebackers hit his way, and cleanly fielding all of them. He had seven strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings pitched.

On the final day of the 2018 PG Super25 17u Florida Super Qualifier, Isaiah Cordero (2019, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the ball for Banditos Florida Black 17u. In four innings, Cordero shut down FPST, striking out eight hitters and allowing zero runs. With 10 runs of support, his team earned their way into the championship game. Cordero’s fastball sat 79-83 mph, using the pitch to attack both halves of the plate. He sprinkled in a curveball at 64-67 mph that was equally effective.

Javian Serrano (2020, Coral Springs, Fla.) collected a few hits in a semifinal loss to Panama Mutiny Legends. He went 2-for-2 at the plate, including a single up the middle. Standing 6-foot, 160-pounds, the young shortstop has room to fill out and add on muscle in the future. He has an athletic build and takes a direct swing path to the baseball.

Meeting up in the championship game, Banditos Florida Black 17u and Panama Mutiny Legends had a number of standout players on both sides.

For Panama Mutiny Legends, Ricardo Garcia (2020, Doral, Fla.) was impactful at the plate and on the mound. Offensively, Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. One of his hits was a perfectly executed bunt down the first base line. He ran a 4.06 time to first on the bunt hit from the righthanded batters box. Standing only 5-foot-8, Garcia sat 84-87 mph with his fastball and touched 90 mph. He flashed a slurvy breaking ball with good downward tilt.

His catcher, who hit third in the lineup right behind Garcia, David Castillo (2020, David, Panama) had a successful day at the plate. A standout on the field due to his large 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame, Castillo shows the ability to impact the baseball. He went 3-for-3, ending the game just a home run away from the cycle. His strong, durable body type should hold up well behind the plate, and he may be able to transition to a corner infield or outfield spot. He is equipped with a strong throwing arm and has solid defensive ability with the chance to improve as he matures.

Daniel Moreno (2019, Miami, Fla.) had a successful day offensively for Banditos Florida Black 17u, which helped contribute to a championship run his team went on. A lefthanded hitter with a simple approach at the plate, Moreno had an RBI double and scored two runs in the semifinal game against FPST. He followed that up with an RBI single to right field in the championship game vs Panama Mutiny Legends.
