Fall Program Information

Steve James
The fall of 2017 marks a change in how Perfect Game will be organizing high school leagues.  In the past, we've run Iowa Select Teams with the top players in Iowa.  That will continue and be expanded upon.  The Fall Wood Bat League will turn more towards the developmental side of the game and be an Instructional League.  All high school players are welcome to sign up for the Instructional League to improve their fundamentals and skills.  The Fall Instructional League will consist of training sessions on Saturday and games on Sunday.  There will be anywhere from 4 to 6 coaches at each training session with a focus on development in all aspects of the game.  The training sessions will be more position specific to the game and will have a limited number of players at each training session.  The location of the league will vary depending on where the bulk of players are coming from.  There is some flexibility with how the Instructional League will be run depending on what will be the most beneficial to the players.

The Iowa Select Teams have been the top travel team in Iowa since its inception in 2005.  We started with one team in 2005 and have expanded to five teams in 2016.  The goal for the Iowa Select program is to have 2 teams at each grad year that will play in the fall and spring.  This fall we will play an aggressive schedule against the top competition at excellent venues at each age group.  Returning players who have already been invited do not need to attend one of the tryouts.  The three tryout dates for the high school groups are for players who have improved since the last time we've seen them or players we haven't seen yet.  The tryout dates for the 2018-2021 players is July 20, August 2, and August 5.  The August 6th tryout date is for the 2022 grads team that will play this fall and spring/summer of 2018.

Player development will be more of a focus for the Select Teams moving forward as well.  This winter we will be offering an off-season training program for the Select Team players.  The off-season training will be at our facility in Cedar Rapids for 18 Sundays starting the middle of November.  The Sunday team training sessions will include positional defensive work, hitting groups, dry reps and mechanical work for pitchers, and a physical workout to finish practice.

Other additional training options we will offer to any player are hitting groups that meet twice per week and the expansion of our off-season arm care program for pitchers.  The hitting group sessions will have Monday/Wednesday groups and Tuesday/Thursday groups.  The off-season arm care program for pitchers will run from the middle of January until the middle of March.  Space is more limited for the arm care program and more information will be provided later on this fall.

Next Spring we will continue the Iowa Select program instead of the usual Iowa Spring League.  The Iowa Select Teams will be playing in an Elite Midwest Spring League with the top organizations out of Wisconsin.  The combination between the Iowa Select Teams and Hitters Baseball will provide the most competitive and well scouted Spring League in the country.  More details about the Spring Season will be available later this fall.

For players who don't make the Iowa Select Teams, we will offer a league in the spring.  As of now there aren't any details available as we want to see how the new changes this fall work out.
