What a whirlwind year it has been for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
The Commodores entered 2011 hoping to make a statement on several fronts. On the field, the ‘Dores had an amazing spring and captured the program’s first College World Series appearance with an NCAA Super Regional series win over Oregon State. Vanderbilt’s rush of success wasn’t limited to everything on the field. It trickled to everything off the field, too. The Commodores received fantastic news in August when prized pitcher Tyler Beede decided to attend college despite getting offered big-time money from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Finally, the Commodores knew they had it good in 2011 and with the 2012 recruiting class when talented catcher Chris Harvey, a Perfect Game All-American, decided to forego his senior year of high school to attend Vandy this fall. Harvey was fantastic for the ‘Dores, leading the team in hitting and gaining 15 pounds of muscle.
The Commodores’ special year was culminated with the signing of 14 outstanding prospects (including Harvey); the class including impressive balance with eight ultra-talented pitchers and six position players with much upside.
“The goal with this class was to assemble a group of guys that complemented our freshman class from last year well. We think we did that with a class with a great personality and some balance,” Vanderbilt recruiting coordinator Josh Holliday said. “This is a really bright and talented group of kids. The group has a high level of makeup, and I think they’re destined to do some great things.”
