PREMIUM ANALYSIS: Going inside the projections
Texas A&M wishes the season ended today.
If that was the case, there's a good chance the Aggies would be a national seed. The Aggies are perceived to be the Big 12's top team despite having the same league record as rival Texas. They also have compiled some impressive wins this season, and have an RPI of 13 with an overall record of 24-9.
The Aggies are 3-3 vs. RPI Top 25, 8-6 vs. RPI Top 50 and 16-8 vs. RPI Top 100. But what puts the Aggies over the top as the No. 8 national seed as opposed to those that missed out is the fact they headline one of the nation's elite conferences.
Other national seeds in the projections include Virginia, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Fresno State and Georgia Tech.
Virginia is 8-2 vs. RPI Top 25, 13-3 vs. RPI Top 50 and 18-3 vs. RPI Top 100, Vanderbilt is 7-2 vs. RPI Top 25, 12-3 vs. RPI Top 50 and 14-3 vs. RPI Top 100, South Carolina is 6-3 vs. RPI Top 25, 9-4 vs. RPI Top 50 and 14-5 vs. RPI Top 100, North Carolina is 6-1 vs. RPI Top 25, 8-1 vs. RPI Top 50 and 18-4 vs. RPI Top 100, Florida is 5-5 vs. RPI Top 25, 13-7 vs. RPI Top 50 and 24-8 vs. RPI Top 100, Fresno State is 2-0 vs. RPI Top 25, 6-0 vs. RPI Top 50 and 14-3 vs. RPI Top 100 and Georgia Tech is 6-2 vs. RPI Top 25, 11-3 vs. RPI Top 50 and 22-9 vs. RPI Top 100.
Arizona State, Florida State, Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State, Southern Mississippi and Texas also were considered for national seeds.
The other NCAA Regional hosts besides the eight national seeds include Arizona State, Florida State, Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State, Texas, Rice, Southern Mississippi and Stetson.
The last five teams in the projections are UAB, Southeastern Louisiana, Central Florida, San Jose State and Tulane.
The last five teams out of the projections are East Carolina, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech, Long Beach State and East Tennessee State.
