PREMIUM ANALYSIS: Breaking down Stanford-Texas Game 1

Texas starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann is on another level this season.

After putting together a dominant sophomore campaign last season that earned him the status as one of the top prospects for the upcoming MLB draft, there was a thought that Jungmann didn’t have much to improve this season.

The notion apparently is false.

Amazingly, Jungmann has improved since last season, and he extended his string of dominant starts to three on Friday as he struck out nine in 8 2/3 innings en route to an impressive 4-3 win over Stanford.

“He’s really improved his breaking ball. He’s using it more often, he’s changing directions with it and he’s throwing more strikes,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. “He also has developed an excellent changeup against left-handed hitters, and that’s something he really hasn’t had before this season.”

For the year, Jungmann is now 3-0 with a 1.01 ERA in 26 2/3 innings. He also has struck out an astonishing 27 batters with just one walk, while teams are hitting him at a weak .161 clip. The righty has tossed two complete games in three starts.

Jungmann is listed as the No. 4 college prospect by Perfect Game, and the No. 3 pitcher behind UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole and TCU left-hander Matt Purke.

Here’s extensive HD video of Jungmann’s performance against Stanford.
