Alden Segui, RHP, Tampa Jesuit (Fla.)
Segui is a right-handed pitcher who has been on the circuit for the better part of the last calendar year, after a velocity jump last spring led to a lot of increased attention. The North Carolina signee got the ball in this start for the nationally-ranked Jesuit squad who cruised to victory as Segui breezed through two low-stress innings. At 6-foot-3, 197 pounds Segui has good size on the mound and has a simple, stretch-only delivery. The stretch only delivery and effort at release, combined with the impressive stuff, it leads you to believe that Segui could be pitching out of the Tar Heels bullpen right now. He filled up the strike zone during this short look as he sat 91-94 mph with the fastball and was effective at both getting that pitch to both halves of the dish and at locating the pitch above the zone to induce chases. He struck out four hitters over those two frames and used primarily a fastball-slider combination. The slider has good horizontal action with biting life in the low-80s and though the pitch was inconsistent at times, he located it effectively over the arm side to front door right-handed hitters and it showed its best potential to the glove side with more depth to it. Segui also showed a changeup at 84 mph that he spiked. He’ll certainly get attention this spring as he heads up one of the best teams in the country on the mound and Segui was impressive in this brief look.
