2019 Area Code Games: Day 1 Scout Notes

Day two of the 2019 Area Code games began with PG All-American and No.45-ranked 2020, Maryland commit Alex Santos (2020, Bronx, N.Y.) on the hill (very appropriately) for the Yankees squad. Santos looked fantastic in his outing and it felt like he had all of his stuff working. Santos has long legs and uses a high upright leg lift before shoving straight down the hill. Santos really doesn’t use much of a windup, as his windup is a simple back-and-forth step from the stretch position. Much like all the other high-profile arms at this event, his arm is strong sitting in the low-90s, however, it’s his secondary stuff that sets him apart from the rest of the pack. Santos throws both a curveball and a slider, with the latter being the better of the two pitches. His curveball feels like a 12-to-6 to at times 11-to-5 shaped get-me-over pitch that he hasn’t quite discovered how to use as an out-pitch yet. He buried it a few times to see if he get some hitters to bite but he’s still developing its effectiveness. His 10-to-4 shaped slider is a far better pitch with sharp late bite down and it was very effective to the back foot of lefthanded hitters. However, that’s not to say he should do away with the curveball all together as its different shape complements his 78 mph slider nicely. Santos also has a plus off-speed pitch that he saved until his third inning of work, throwing it back-to-back for a strikeout to end the inning. He gets some solid pronation out of the changeup and simply surprised the hitter with it in the third as no one had seen it up to that point. It sits around 84 mph and is just another pitch to whip out of his bag of tricks. Again, another strong pitchability profile on the mound with a very high ceiling as he develops.
