The college baseball postseason, as it always does, coincides with the annual MLB Draft, set to take place Monday through Wednesday, June 3-5. During the weekend of Regional play we will track the performances of some of the top prospects from the college ranks while sharing some of the reports produced as part of our draft preview content. Prospect Breakdown



Erik Miller, Stanford
Miller served as Stanford’s Sunday starter all season long and head coach David Esquer saved his big lefthander for the second of their two games on Sunday knowing he had to win two games, and another on Monday, to advance. Miller followed Alex Williams’ complete game win against Sacramento State with a solid performance against Fresno State. He turned to his big-breaking curveball frequently, setting up the pitch with an upper-80s to low-90s fastball. His arm slot comes somewhat straight over the top, using his towering stature well to pitch on a downhill plane. He ran out of gas in the sixth inning but finished the game with 12 punchouts in 5 2/3 innings, good enough to pick up the win.

Big tall and strong, Miller’s combination of size and stuff made him an appealing prospect coming out of a Missouri high school. He has always shown flashes of dominance but hasn’t consistently put the pieces together while at Stanford. He enters the draft as the 78th-ranked prospect with a ceiling as big as his 6-foot-5, 220-pound stature.

Tommy Henry, Michigan
Although Henry spent the entire season as Michigan’s ace, he followed rotation mates Karl Kauffmann and Jeff Criswell in the starting order this weekend in Corvallis. With host Oregon State bowing out early, it gave Michigan an opportunity to emerge as the Regional winner, which they still may do, but they’re going to have to wait a day as Creighton came from behind late to force a decisive Regional Finals contest on Monday.

Which is no fault of Henry’s, who left the contest with what seemed like a comfortable lead with one out n the eighth inning, only to have the Wolverines’ bullpen blow the save opportunity. Henry did what he has all season prior to that, filling up the strike zone with upper-80s to low-90s fastball and a sharp upper-70s to low-80s slider. He’s ranked 49th heading into the draft.

Dominic Fletcher, Arkansas
Fletcher had a nice day on Sunday helping to propel to Super Regional action as they continue to make amends from their missed national championship opportunity from 2018. Fletcher kicked off the scoring in the first inning, hitting a two-run double in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate as part of the Razorbacks 6-0 victory over TCU. It was Fletcher’s 23rd two-bagger of the season.

Overall Fletcher has enjoyed a solid three-year career for Arkansas. A lefthanded hitter, he has a short, direct yet powerful swing to the baseball with the ability to drive the ball to the gaps and over the fence. There’s some speed to his game and his best tool is his arm strength which will continue to serve him well at the next level either in center or right field. He enters the draft as the 92nd-best prospect.

Josh Smith, LSU
It will be interesting to see where Smith is draft as a lefthanded hitting shortstop with very good athleticism, a little bit of pop and a little bit of speed. He stole his 19th and 20th bases of the year on Saturday and hit his ninth home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning on Sunday. One inning later he hit a two-run triple while going 4-for-10 in three games as LSU advanced to Super Regional play.

Smith was an interesting prospect coming out of high school and enjoyed a productive freshman season. He missed most of his sophomore year and reports out of fall ball were especially positive as he headed into his junior year looking to make up for lost time. He’s ranked 64th among all draft-eligible prospects.

Aaron Schunk, Georgia
Schunk had a second two home run game in Georgia’s first contest on Sunday, a 13-0 win over FAU to advance to the Regional final, where their season came to an end at home – for the second year in a row – to Florida State. Schunk may have gone 0-4 in the elimination game, he came up huge in the first game, going 2-for-4 with the two bombs and six total RBI. He went 2-for-5 on Friday with a pair of dingers and 2-for-4 on Saturday with a pair of RBI, driving in 13 runs in four games.

Although Schunk also serves as Georgia’s closer he did not make a pitching appearance over the weekend. View Friday’s recap for more on Schunk.


Drew Mendoza, Florida State
Covered in Friday’s Regional Recap, Mendoza enjoyed a strong weekend, finishing FSU’s Regional-clinching weekend with a 2-for-4 performance with a pair of doubles, a walk, two runs scored and one RBI. Mendoza went 7-for-15 (.467) with six runs scored, five driven in three doubles and two home runs as part of Florida State’s huge showing in Athens to advance, out-scoring host Georgia 22-4 in two games.

Chase Strumpf, UCLA
Strumpf had been swinging a cold bat heading into Sunday’s game, as even the triple he was credited for on Saturday was a misplayed ball by LMU’s right fielder. However, he changed that early in UCLA’s re-match against Loyola Marymount later on Sunday, hitting a three-run home run in the third inning that would give the Bruins all the cushion they would need to force a decisive winner-take-all game on Monday.

Strumpf entered the year as a Preseason All-American and enjoyed another solid season at the plate. He’s the 48th-ranked draft prospect with an intriguing second base profile. He’s at hit best driving the ball to the gaps with a knack for hitting doubles oppo to the right-center field as a righthanded hitter. He’s a good overall athlete that does everything well and profiles well both offensively and defensively at second base.

Michael Toglia, UCLA
Like teammate Chase Strumpf, Michael Toglia had been swinging somewhat of a cool bat prior to Sunday’s action. He hit not one but two home runs for UCLA, one in each of their two victories on the day, going a combined 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI. Toglia is a rare lefthanded throwing, switch-hitting slugger with a tall, athletic and still slender frame that can hit some majestic, tape-measure shots when he gets fully extended.

Toglia as been on the scouting radar since his big freshman season, and his two home run, three RBI day gives him 16 jacks and 60 ribbies for the season. He’s ranked 68th overall heading into the draft.

Hunter Bishop, Arizona State
Bishop didn’t get much of a chance to show what he’s all about in Baton Rouge (although his teammate Spencer Torkelson, the top prospect eligible for next year’s draft, did), going 2-for-9 in the series. However, he walked four times on Saturday and three more times on Sunday, hitting a two-run double in a heartbreaking loss to Southern Miss. Bishop is ranked 10th among all players eligible for this year’s draft and is a rare potential five-tool prospect packaged in an athletic 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame.

Seth Johnson, Campbell
Johnson has one of the more interesting baseball backgrounds of any player expected to be drafted on the first day of this year’s draft. A converted middle infielder, Johnson spent his first two innings at Louisburg JC and appeared in only six innings last year as a sophomore, striking out 11 during that time. The move appears to be a very astute one as Johnson had a big season for the Fighting Camels, posting a 4.61 ERA in 14 games (11 starts) with a 81-to-30 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 66 1/3 innings.

Campbell likely wanted to hold Johnson until Sunday but turned to him out of the bullpen in their eventual Regional Finals-clinching victory over Quinnipiac, working 5 1/3 innings in relief, giving up a pair of earned runs on seven hits (and no walks) with four strikeouts. He worked mostly in the low-90s in this one, but has approached triple digits with the foundation for three secondary pitches, the best of which is his mid-80s slider. He is ranked 35th heading into the draft as Campbell is in the driver’s seat with only one game to win in the Greenville Regional.
