Team Sheet: Virginia

Kyler Peterson
What Happened: Virginia went 3-0 in Jacksonville, winning 5-4 over Wichita State (10 inn.), 12-9 over Iowa, and 6-4 over Auburn. The team looked well-rounded and strong in all facets.

Biggest Strength: Lineup Depth
The ‘Hoos are deep 1-through-9 and collected 37 hits over the weekend. Shortstop Griff O'Farrall and Ethan Anderson are potential Day One picks. Harrison Didawick and Henry Godbout look poised to have huge breakout sophomore campaigns. The offense is well-rounded and can hit for average, hit for power, and steal bases.

Concern: Bullpen Depth
This is not a major concern, as Aidan Teel looks more than capable of stepping into the closer role. They have solid arm talent from different slots but will need to depend on some younger/inexperienced arms to step up.

Best Player on the Field: Ethan Anderson
Anderson brings great production back into the lineup coming off of a 2023 that he slashed .375/.469/.649 with 15 homers and 26 doubles. A switch-hitter, he has so many hitter traits and will be getting time behind the dish in his Draft eligible year.

Griff O'Ferrall, SS

O'Ferrall is a potential Day One guy entering the 2024 campaign. The shortstop struggled through the first couple games and made a lot of weak contact. He took much better at-bats and found some grass on Sunday, picking up two knocks. O'Ferrall batted .396 as a sophomore, and the bat-to-ball skills are undeniable and will show up as the spring continues. The hit tool figures to be average and although there isn’t impact power, he has began to flash some sneaky pop. He is an above-average runner with a high acumen on the paths and across the board. O’Ferrall has great feel in the dirt and a sure glove to match. The arm is solid average, and he looks the part to stick at short. The swing has very simple components and the path is linear. O'Ferrall has good hand speed and has only struck out at a 13% rate over a large sample size through his first two seasons.
