Vaughn Mauterer is a 2019 C/RHP with a 5-11 160 lb. frame from San Rafael, CA who attends Marin Catholic. Medium frame with an athletic build. Projects for additional size with strength. Ran a 7.11 sixty-yard dash. Primary catcher with a low, slightly side set stance while receiving. Gains ground with quick, fundamentally sound footwork. Polished, fluid exchanges while working through transfer with a clean glove circle. Released from a compact three-quarters arm slot produced accurate, on line carry to the bag topping at 76 miles per hour. Best workout pop time of 1.95. Right handed hitter with a spread, even stance and heel up trigger. Created some shift into contact with rotational lower half actions. Simple, direct hand path to contact with a line drive barrel plane through extension. Stays balanced throughout and showed the ability to repeat path and plane. Consistently barrel baseball throughout while working to each gap with solid jump off the barrel. Also pitched working exclusively from the stretch. Simple leg lift delivery and stays balanced at gather. Works to the plate with drop and drive actions. Lands at a slightly closed position generating some cross fire at release. Loose arm circle at take back and released from a three-quarters slot. Flashed good arm speed through extension with a heavy fastball that had run to arm side in the low to mid 80's, topped at 86 miles per hour. Maintains arm speed with breaking ball creating good spin with late tilt to glove side in the low 70's. Also flashed a changeup offering that had some sink in the upper 70's. Looks to fill the zone while challenging hitters. Shows developing feel to locate to each edge of the plate consistently. Good student. Named to the 2017 NorCal Showcase Top Prospect List.
