Matthew Johnston is a 2019 RHP/1B with a 6-2 200 lb. frame from Old Hickory, TN who attends Mount Juliet HS. Large frame with some strength present. Ran a 7.28 second 60 yard dash. Primary righthanded pitcher, begins delivery with a short side step up to a high leg lift, stays balanced at gather and works to the plate with drop and drive actions, lands in line and carries momentum to arm side slightly, deep arm circle and released from a three-quarters arm slot. Fastball topped out at 88 mph with heavy run to the plate, heater showed some jump out of his hand, slider had tight 9/4 shape with late tilt, good arm speed with changeup offering that flashed some fade, around the zone during outing with all three offerings. Secondary first baseman, fields the baseball into body, releases with a loose arm and a side arm slot, topped out at 83 mph from first base. Righthanded hitter, sets up with a low hand set, begins swing with an early leg kick, compact swing with a developing feel for the barrel. Great student. Named to 2018 Fall Academic Showcase Top Prospect List.
