7/9/2008 7:00:00 PM
Very heavy rains have hit the northern part of the tournament fields. The East Cobb Complex and surrounding fields have been especially hard hit.
On the other hand, the southern and western fields (South Cobb, Southern Poly, Dominion Christian, Mt. Paran, Kennesaw Mountain, Ward Park, Weber School) have played full schedules today.
Teams/Coaches who had games postponed or stopped in progress will be contacted by PG Staff when their games have been rescheduled.
As of 7 pm this evening, the Thursday schedule will be played as planned, pending fields being dry enough at 9 am tomorrow morning.
7/9/2008 4:00:00 PM
Rain continues to affect play at about half the fields. We’re just about to get underway again at East Cobb and Kell. Games at Blessed Trinity, Alpharetta, Centennial, Walton, Wheeler Pope and Sprayberry have been delayed to some extent.
All fields to the north and south are on schedule, including North Cobb, North Cobb Christian, Etowah, Southern Poly, Kennesaw Mountain, Cherokee, Dominion Christian, Wark Park, Weber and Mt. Paran.
Game 183 that was scheduled for Walton HS at 5:30 has been shifted to North Cobb Christian School and will start at approximately 5:30.
7/9/2008 3:00:00 PM
The East Cobb Complex seems to be the rain magnate so far this week. We are currently in rain delay and have been for about 30 minutes, although it appears to be disappating and the radar is clearing up. All other fields are currently playing.
7/9/2008 3:00:00 PM
3:35 Wednesday
The rain has developed more than expected in North Cobb County. We’ve been in a rain delay at East Cobb and Kell HS for about an hour. Sprayberry HS, Walton HS and Pope HS have been canceled for the day (4:30 and 7:00 pm slots).
We are in the process of rescheduling the Sprayberry, Walton and Pope games. Check back for updates.
7/9/2008 2:00:00 PM
2:35 Wednesday
There are very isolated showers forming in the Cobb County area as of 2:30. The East Cobb Complex is in a delay, caused more by lightning than rain. Cherokee is also in a delay. It looks like things will be fine in a 10-15 minutes when everything blows through, so it shouldn’t effect the overall schedule.
7/9/2008 1:00:00 PM
The constant ongoing process of updating the Game Wraps continues as games are finished and scoresheets make their way to the East Cobb Tower. If you haven’t been checking the Game Wraps for notable performances from each game, please do so by visiting http://worldwoodbat.com/TournamentSchedule.aspx?id=296 and clicking on the “Wrap” icon on each game line.
7/9/2008 12:00:00 PM
The Wednesday schedule is in full swing, with about 25 games already completed today. Games at Kell HS, the East Cobb Complex, Centennial HS, Alpharetta HS and Reinhardt College got started late but the schedule is flowing smoothly right now. The weather report looks promising for the time being as well.
One of the games that was postponed last night has already been finished, Game #87 between Maryland Select and ABD Bulldogs ’09 (5-5 tie).
We’re getting reports of lots of big performances (14 K’s by one pitcher, a 2 HR/6 Rbi game by a hitter) thus far this morning but I’ll wait until I see the game sheets until I pass on the details.
One noteworthy game from late yesterday before the rains hit was the East Cobb Braves 8-0 run rule shortened (5 innings) victory over Chattanooga Baseball. RHP Zach Wheeler (4 innings) and LHP Matt Lane (1 inning) combined for a no-hitter for the Braves. Wheeler, an Aflac All-American who has been outstanding all summer, was steady 90-92 mph with a late breaking 79 mph curveball. CF Brandon Roberts was 2-3 with 2 Rbi’s and a run scored out of the lead off spot for East Cobb.
7/9/2008 10:00:00 AM
The time for one of the canceled games from Tuesday night has been adjusted
Game 96 between Team Rawlings Bulls and Team IBC 17's will be played on Thursday at 4:30 pm. It was originally posted for 11:30 am.
7/9/2008 8:00:00 AM
8:20 AM Wednesday
The following fields will be starting on time or close to on time this morning. All coaches/teams scheduled at these fields today should assume they will be playing as scheduled.
Southern Poly
Reinhardt College
Alpharetta
North Cobb HS
North Cobb Christian
Cherokee
Sprayberry
Weber School
Kennesaw Mountain HS
Etowah HS
7/9/2008 8:00:00 AM
8:35 AM Wednesday
Centennial HS will be in a short delay this morning. The teams from the 9 am and 11:30 am time slots have been contacted but teams playing there in later time slots should assume that their games will start at or close to their original start times unless contacted and told otherwise.
Ward Park games are starting as scheduled
The fields at the East Cobb Complex and Kell HS seem to have taken the brunt of the rains last night. We are shooting for a 10 AM start time at this point but will be trying to turn over games quickly once we get started. Teams scheduled at these fields later today should assume they are playing as scheduled unless contacted and told otherwise.
7/15/2008 10:35:00 AM
The 16 and Under WWBA Tournament is well underway throughout the Atlanta area this morning. The weather is great for baseball and the 9:00am games are nearing conclusion. So far there is only one final score as 6-4-3 DP Baseball Academy shutout the Maryland Redbirds 3 to 0 at Kennisaw Mountain High School. Please check back on the blog and the WWBA website for updates as the day goes along.

RHP Mike Petree (2009) of the Kansas City Metro Stars threw a complete game no-hitter against the Delaware Storm but was denied a victory when the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Petree struck out 13 hitters and walked 2. He throws from a low 3/4's arm slot and pitches in the 83-85 mph range with curveball and very nice change up. 2010 RHP Matt McClain threw a 2-hit complete game for the Storm.
LHP Taylor Eikenberry (2009) of the Midwest Blazers threw a 1-hitter with 12 K's in a 6-1 win over the Florida Hardballers. Eikenberry, who is from Rock Falls, IL, touched 88 mph with his fastball but got most of his strikeouts with a sharp 70 mph curveball.
ABD Boxers CF Taylor Richardson (2009, Tustin, CA) put up a clean up hitter's line from the lead off spot during the Boxer's 12-2 win over Action Baseball Club. Richardson led off the top of the first inning with a home run, hit a 2 run double in the 2nd inning and added an Rbi single in the Boxer's 7 run 5th inning. Richardson finished 3-3 with 4 Rbi's and 2 runs.

8:40 PM: Two games are underway in early innings and will be completed tonight. Diamond Vision Elite vs. Windward Rangers are playing at Dominion Christian HS. Palm Beach Select and New York Nine Showcase are playing at North Cobb HS.
7/8/2008 7:30:00 PM
The regular Wednesday, July 9 schedule remains in effect. All games will be played as originally posted on the schedule.
There are 6 games from this afternoon that were delayed by rain before they were official games and 10 games that were not started. Those games will be continued or made up as soon as possible beginning tomorrow as fields become available. Coaches of these teams will be contacted individually by Perfect Game staff as these time slots are determined.
7/8/2008 6:55:00 PM
All fields are under rain or lightning delays. All but 5 of the 4:30 games were finished, but the East Cobb fields are currently completely under water.
ALL coaches/teams will need to check the schedule on the WWBA website later this evening for schedule changes.
7/8/2008 6:05:00 PM
A number of strong thunderheads have popped up in the East Cobb area. The Complex is currently under a lightning delay and at least one satellite field (Blessed Trinity) is under rain delay. Stay tuned for further updates.
7/8/2008 5:30:00 PM
1B Jonathan Singleton put on a show at the Perfect Game National Showcase, winning the Rawlings Home Run Challenge and rapping out 3 hits in the games. Close to 4 weeks later it doesn’t look like he’s slacked off any. Hitting 3rd for the San Gabriel Valley Arsenal, Singleton went 2-3 with 4 Rbi’s, including a 3 run home run in the first inning. His second at bat might have been more impressive than his home run. With a runner on second base and 2 out, facing a pitcher throwing in the upper 80’s, Singleton kept his swing short and lined an outside fastball over the shortstop’s head for a clean Rbi single. Most young hitters, coming off a home run the previous at bat, would have rolled over that pitch and grounded out.
7/8/2008 2:10:00 PM
RHP's Tim Brechbuehler (3 innings) and Brett Koehler (2 innings) combined on a 5 inning no-hitter in a 11-0 win for the South Florida Bandits American over Louisiana Elite. Brechbuehler is a 6-8, 200 lb'er from Gillette, NJ, who pitches in the 87-90 mph range. Koehler is a 6-4, 200 lb'er from Glen Gardner, NJ, who pitches in the 85-87 mph range.
7/8/2008 1:30:00 PM
Jordan Hebert of Team DeMarini hit a dramatic walk-off 3-run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning to give Team DeMarini a 3-2 win over Akadema Indiana Yankees Tuesday in the 11:30 time slot. Hebert is a 2009 prospect from Bishop Lynch HS in Dallas, TX.
7/8/2008 1:10:00 PM
Akadema/Florida Raiders LHP Patrick Schuster threw the first masterpiece of the 17U championships, tossing a complete game no-hitter against the Dallas Panthers Tuesday in the 11:30 time slot. Schuster struck out 13 hitters and didn't issue a walk, although he did hit 2 hitters and another Panther reached on an error. Schuster has been pitching at Perfect Game and WWBA events since he was a freshman and recently participated in the PG National Showcase in Minneapolis.

As wraps are posted during the week, there are occasionally mistakes made in posting game details.
If the mistake is "major" such as a wrong name due to a program error or the wrong winning/losing pitcher, please email David Rawnsley at
rawnsleyd@aol.com and a) give the game number b) team involved, and c) what the mistake was and it will be corrected.
If it's something "minor" like "Johnny had 5 strikeouts, not 4 strikeouts", then we'll chalk it up minor human error or miscounting on someone's part and let it go.
7/8/2008 8:30:00 AM
Things are set and ready to go for the WWBA 17U National Championship from Marietta, Georgia. 192 teams from across the country are here to compete for the title, which was won in 2007 by the East Cobb Braves. Games will be played on 23 fields across greater North Atlanta.
The Championship is broken down into 32 individual pools of 6 teams each. Teams will play 1 game a day for five days before each of the 32 pool winner will advance on to the playoffs starting on Sunday, with the champion to be crowned Monday afternoon. .
Check in frequently to this blog to follow all the action throughout the week. Up to date scores, pool standings and game wraps are available on the World Wood Bat Association web site (www.worldwoodbat.com).

Incorrect directions to Wheeler High School were distributed in the coaches packets (stapled to the schedules).
On the first line of the Wheeler directions, it reads "go west onto 120 loop". It should say "GO EAST ONTO 120 LOOP."

The logistics of how information flows from the field to this blog and to the WWBA web site and eventually to the Perfect Game data base is pretty simple, but the sheer volume of the information is huge.
Every field has at least one Perfect Game scout who is in charge of game management (i.e. making sure the umpires and teams are there and ready, ensuring the field is prepped after the last game, etc.), keeping the scorebook and recording scouting notes. The first thing they do at the end of every game is call in the score (to yours truly) and that score is immediately posted on the WWBA web site. The web site automatically updates the pool standings.
The scoresheets with the game results and scouting notes take longer to make their way back to the tower at the East Cobb Complex (i.e. Information Central). Sheets from the Complex fields or nearby fields (Pope, Walton, Sprayberry, etc) get back to the Tower periodically during the day but those from the outlying fields might not get back until the end of the day.
Once a scoresheet reaches the Tower, it’s checked for all sorts of things (top prospects, top performances, etc.), then a game wrap is created on the WWBA website for each game summarizing the top performers and pitchers of record.
So the reality is that game wraps for a majority of the games are done 6-24 hours after the game is finished. The goal is for all 480 pool play games and all the consolation and playoff games to have a wrap written for them.
1/1/1980 9:00:00 AM
The weather during the recently completed 18U National Championship couldn’t have been better, with pool play being 100% complete and only a couple of consolation games being rained out.
It’s not especially realistic to think that will continue for another week, as there is a 30% chance of thunderstorms each of the next 5 days and there have been heavy rains in the area the past two nights. The fields are all wet but playable this morning.
The entire area has been in the midst of an extended drought, so all rain is welcomed by the local community. We’ll hope it continues to come during the night.
If weather does become a factor, be sure to check back here for updates.
