2015 NE Super Qualifier Preview

Jordan Posway
The Perfect Game Super25 Northeast Super Qualifiers for the 10-13u age groups will be held this weekend in Staten Island, New York. The 10u and 12u teams will begin tournament play at 5:30 pm Friday, June 5th, while the 11u and 13u squads will continue the action at 8:00 am the next morning. The organizations involved in the Northeast Super Qualifiers will be competing for a berth in the PG Super25 National Championship.

The 2015 PG Super25 Mid-Atlantic Regional champions, the Tri-State Arsenal 10u Blue, headline a competitive 10u age group. Much of their roster received All-Tournament honors from the Mid-Atlantic Regional which includes talented pitchers such as #27 AJ Gracia and #8 Jeremy Cheeseman. The Jersey City Saints and Team Phenom have proven to be formidable opponents and could very well be in the running to unseat the regional champions.

As the reigning 11u Mid-Atlantic Regional champions, BC Phenom has a bulls-eye on their back. Teams such as Gallagher Team Mizuno and Team Velocity came up empty in the regional but look for redemption in the form of a national championship berth. Gallagher Team Mizuno will have the first crack at the regional champs as they are both in Pool A. However, Team Velocity and their five All-Tournament players in particular pose a serious threat to end BC Phenom’s run.

There are 24 teams involved, but a trio of talented players stand out in the 12u Super Qualifier tournament. Chase Swain is a jack of all trades and a player to watch on the BC Brushback Elite. Swain and company certainly have the talent to make a serious run in the tournament. However, #21 David Zamora of Molina Baseball and #23 Nick Kurtz of the Lancaster Jr. Barnstormers are two other versatile players that could steal the show and provide some stiff competition. Although they are newcomers to the Super Qualifier, Team B.E.A.S.T. is a dark horse candidate to keep an eye on.

Just a few weeks removed from their second place finish in the 13u Mid-Atlantic Regional, Tri-State Arsenal Gautier looks to get over the hump. Same can be said about the Central Jersey Warriors who had a strong three win showing at the Mid-Atlantic Regional but ultimately came up short. There will also be an influx of New York teams such as Syracuse Sports Zone and Team Phenom that hope to claim the national championship berth for themselves. There is a lot of parity in this age group, so it will certainly be a fun tournament to watch.

The qualifier championship games for all age brackets will take place on Sunday, June 7th. The 10u and 11u qualifier champions will compete in the PG Super25 National Championship July 16-21 at the East Cobb Baseball Complex in Marietta, Georgia, while the 12u squads are scheduled to duke it out the following weekend. The 13u winners will punch their ticket to Fort Myers, Florida for their national championship set for June 19-25. Three days of baseball and temperatures in the 70s make Staten Island the place to be this weekend.
