Griffon Indoor Scouting Recap

Teams from across the Midwest met this weekend in St. Joseph, Mo. for a four-game, pool play battle. Playing at the Griffon Indoor practice facility on the campus of the Missouri Western State Griffons, 12 teams squared off in two pools for early season bragging rights.

Iowa Elite Red and North Iowa Heat came away with their respective pool wins, both winning all four of their games. Non-stop offense, overpowering pitching, and stingy defense helped lead both these teams to a 4-0 record.

Hitting home runs is alway difficult indoors, but these players made it seem easy. Ella Shafer, Bailee Rinacke, Meredith Cole, Ainsley Yoakam, Hunter Jonas, Ava Wombles, and Cameron Hurt all collected one home run during the day, with Shafer hitting two.

The Eastern Iowa Barricudas/Vantiger squad had a great showing, posting a 3-1 record, while scoring runs in bunches was this team's mission from the onset. Emily Watters (2023, Anamosa, Iowa) was a big reason behind the ‘Cudas run. Emily used her speed to swipe five bags, score six runs and tally five hits. Her teammate Lexi Whaley (2024, Fort Madison, Iowa) did damage with her bat. Lexi has huge pop at the point of contact, driving the ball for line drives. Lexi herself drove in five runs, scored three runs, and hit three doubles.

Ana Glawe (2025, Atkins, Iowa) played a pivotal role for Iowa Elite Red's 4-0 record. Ana had six hits on the day, setting the table for her teammates to drive her in. Scoring two runs and driving in three more helped Iowa Elite win the pool. Ana used an advanced approach at the dish to pick her pitch, and once she had it, she rarely missed.

KC Rebels 18 - Streeter was a competitive team all day long. Ainsley Yoakam (2024, Lansing, Kan.) was selective all day, hunting the pitch she wanted, and using that approach and patience to tally four hits, including a home run. Ainsley also stole two bases and drove in four runs. Rebels teammate Reagan Wiehe (2024, Kansas City, Kan.) also had a productive day at the plate, collecting five hits, scoring three runs, and driving in three more.

Pumas Fastpitch was one run away from also finishing 4-0 on the day. Bailee Rinacke (2022, Buckner, Mo.) used an uppercutting, powerful swing to drive balls up the middle and to the pull side. Bailee collected five hits including a no-doubt home run, driving in three and scoring four more.

North Iowa Heat has 14 weapons sitting on the bench, with each player bringing something special to the team, making the Heat a force on the field. Makella Jacobs (2023, Clear Lake, Iowa) is one of those weapons, and having an advanced softball IQ helps her to use what the pitcher throws to her advantage. Hitting two doubles and a triple helped Makella drive in five runs. Her Heat teammate Libby Trewin (2025 ,Sheffield, Iowa) was a dual threat, getting things done at the plate and in the circle. On offense, Trewin was a threat to score every time she came to the plate.

Driving in three and scoring four runs, Trewin helped complete the 4-0 run. In the circle, she was equally dangerous, topping out at 59 mph, and using a mix of pitches to rack up 12 strikeouts over nine innings pitched. Trewin also posted a sub-1.00 ERA and a WHIP of 1.22, collecting half of her team's wins.

Ella Shafer (2023, Stillwell, Kan.) of KC Rebels 18 National was another dual threat player. Shafer performed at a high level on both sides of the ball. She was one triple away from a natural cycle, and she scored six runs, drove in four and hit two home runs through four games. She also stole three bases, making her a complete offensive player. Shafer also competes in the circle, using late and lively breaking balls to set up a 61 mph fastball to keep hitters off balance and guessing. In four innings of work, she collected six strikeouts without giving up a single earned run.
