In total, 87 players took BP at the 2012 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect & Underclass Showcases at BB&T Ballpark. Below are the select few whose round stood out most to the PG scouting staff (listed alphabetically):
-2014 OF/MIF
DJ Burt (Furquay-Varina HS, NC) showed quick hands and loose swing actions, lacing line drives to all fields. Burt is a quick twitch who showed good all-around ability and stood out in every part of the workout. Verbal to South Carolina.
-2013 CIF
Trevor Courtney (IMG Academies, Bradenton, FL) blasted several towering fly balls during his round, the ball jumps off his bat with good bat speed and strength.
-2014 C
Cully Crott (Eugene Ashley HS, Wilmington, NC) showed a quick line drive swing and drives through the ball well for hard line drives, wore out the pullside gap and showed good bat whip.
-2014 3B
Brett Daniels (Fuquay-Varina HS, NC) stood out for generating solid bat speed and a long swing that created good barrel whip through the zone. He drove through the baseball well and consistently squared up hard line drives.
-2014 OF
Storm Edwards (West Henderson HS, Hendersonville, NC) showed raw bat speed and the ball comes off his bat well. He projects for increased strength with physical maturity which will allow him to develop power, has a chance to become a dangerous hitter as he learns to incorporate his lower half into his swing better.
-2014 C/OF
Thomas Gaines (Hiram HS, Powder Springs, GA) has a tendency to interrupt the momentum in his swing but still manages to make hard contact by accelerating the bat well after restarting the flow to the ball and has very good strength at contact. With a small adjustment he will be able to drive the ball with serious authority.
-2013 SS
David Graubics (Atlee HS, Mechanicsville, VA) showed a smooth swing with good bat speed and consistent hard line drives to both left and right field.
-2014 MIF
Chris Hohlstein (Phillips Academy, Columbus, GA) blasted an impressive Hr well beyond the fence in left center field into the party deck beyond the tall fence, aprox 380 feet from home plate. More impressively he did it on the second swing of his round, without the benefit of getting a few pitches to time the pitcher. He has a smooth load and good bat speed with a slight uppercut path.
-2014 RHP/OF
Travis Holden (West Forsyth HS, Clemmons, NC) is an interesting two-way prospect who showed a short swing with quick hands, consistently squaring the ball up with hard line drives. He had the best round of BP of any primary pitcher.
-2013 OF/LHP
Cameron Marshall (Cary Academy, Raleigh, NC) blasted several deep drives to the RF warning track. Marshall swings from his back foot and doesn't get nearly as much of his weight shifted through the ball as he is capable of, yet he impressively hammers the ball with authority. Once he gets his swing ironed out he could be a legitimate power hitter.
-2013 1B/RHP
Zach Michalski (Wesleyan Christian Academy, Belews Creek, NC) massive player with big raw power, big leg kick, good bat speed and hammered the ball with an aggressive swing. Verbal to Delaware.
-2014 3B/RHP
Hunter Morgan (Northern Guilford HS, Summerfield, NC) uses his 6' 4" frame well to create leverage in his swing and drive the ball. He has a short load and quick hands that should allow him to square up live pitching, and as he adds strength to his 190 pound frame he should develop some power as well.
-2013 SS/RHP
Alex Murphy (Chopticon, Clements, MD) has some work to do to iron out the mechanics of his lower half to his swing but the hitting tools are impressive. He showed good bat speed, strength at contact and good extension through the baseball.
-2014 OF/RHP
Trevor Riggs (Nansemond River HS, Suffolk, VA) showed loose swing actions and quick hands. He hit to all fields and showed the makings of good future bat speed as he adds strength to his long projectable frame.
-2016 OF
Sammy Singer (Sidwell Friends HS, North Bethesda, MD) is young and physically immature and has some of the typical swing flaws that are commonplace among 14 year old hitters. But he also shows much better bat speed than you'd expect a player with a 5' 10" 165 lb frame to generate and he showed the ability to square the ball up to all fields. Interesting young player to follow.
-2013 OF
Tyler Stroup (East Davidson HS, Thomasville, NC) has yet to fill out his 5' 10" 165 lb frame, but has the underlying quick twitch athleticism you look for in a high school prospect. He has quick hands and sprayed line drives to all fields well. Verbal to Appalachian State.
-2014 1B
Douglas Taylor (Fayetteville Academy, NC) was one of just two players to homer in BP. It didn't look like it was going to happen for Taylor who hammered a no doubter foul down the LF line and then skied a couple deep drives to the warning track in left center. But on the final swing of his round Taylor lifted one over the wall down the LF line. Taylor shows good body control in his swing for a power hitter and we've seen him hit well at other events in the past.
-2015 MIF
Cobie Vance (Pine Forest HS, Fayetteville, NC) has a big leg kick that causes a late start to his swing, but he has very quick hands and good bat speed which make up for the late start. He has a direct swing path, taking his hands directly to the baseball with good extension through the ball. Young player who has a chance to develop a high level hit tools and hit for occasional power.
-2014 C/OF
Seth Wall (Georgetown HS, SC) strong lean bodied hitter with a deep crouch, deep load and slight uppercut path. He uses his strong lower half and gets leverage into his swing, hitting several balls deep into the spacious outfield at BB&T Ballpark, projects to hit for power.
-2015 RHP
Jeffrey Wong (George Washington HS, Charleston, WV) another pitcher who stood out in BP, Wong has some work to do on his swing but has good raw bat speed and strength at contact that allowed him to make hard contact. If he can incorporate his lower half into his swing more and shift his weight through the ball he can become a power threat at the plate.
