Church, Kriske in upper 80's >>

1/15/2011 8:36:55 PM

Andrew Church(2013 - Las Vegas, NV) and Brooks Kriske(2012 - La Quinta, CA) both pitched well and both were in the upper 80's in game two of the California Underclass Showcase.  Church pitched first and sat in the 84-87 MPH range over his 4 innings of work.  He uses a long arm action with good arm speed.  The ball comes out of his hand clean and his arm works well.  Church is aggressive in the strike zone with his fastball and his fastball gets some down plane action on it.  He also throws a sharp slider at 75 MPH and a sinking CH at 77 MPH.  Church showed pitchability. 2012 Grayson Pratt (Albuquerque, NM) was also up to 86 mph for Crimson.

Kriske followed Church in the rotation and sat at 85-88 MPH with his fastball while touching 89 MPH.  He uses a medium length arm circle in back and his arm works.  Kriske has a loose arm with good arm speed.  He has a good lean build and his body projects.  Kriske throws a sweeping 10/4 curveball at 72 MPH and a fading change up at 75 MPH.  Kriske and Church are both good follows!

Dominic Smith(2013 - Los Angeles, CA), Andrew Pullin(2012 - Centralia, WA) and Jacob Gatewood(2014 - Visalia, CA) all swung the bat well in this game.  Smith is an athletic 6-0/195 lb. 1B/OF with some present strength.  He uses a hand hitch load and generates good bat speed.  Smith has good hitting tools that project.  Pullin generates good bat speed in his swing and the ball jumps.  On his single, the ball exited his bat at 96 MPH!  Gatewood uses a pull approach at the plate and generates good bat speed.  He's a young player being a 2014 and shows promising hitting tools.
Rahier Impressive for Navy Team >>

1/15/2011 5:53:34 PM

Tanner Rahier(2012 - Indian Wells, CA) continued his impressive day with a great all around game.  Rahier was playing short stop and there was a hard hit ground ball hit in the hole.  He went deep in the hole to get the ball and quickly turned and threw an absolute laser to first base to nail the runner in plenty of time.  It was one of those plays that make you say "WOW!"  He also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple, run, and stolen base.  Rahier showed good hitting tools and instincts at the plate to go with his good bat speed.  He also cruised in his 2 innings of work on the mound working steady at 88-90 MPH with his fastball and touched 91 a handful of times.  He also showed a sharp breaking curve ball at 75 MPH.  He's a legit two-way prospect and is verbally committed to the University of San Diego.

Nick Hynes(2012 - Covina, CA) pitched well for the Navy team.  He sat at 84-86 MPH with his fastball and touched 88 MPH.  He's a tall strong kid at 6-4/220 lbs.  Hynes uses a near full back turn at balance point which helps him hide the ball.  His arm works and he has some arm speed.  Hynes could make a jump in velocity quickly with a few adjustments in his delivery.  He should be followed closely!

Dustin Hughes(2013 - San Diego, CA) also had a good game.  He went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and 3 RBI.  He swings on a flat path and made good contact.  He also pitched and touched 86 MPH with his fastball.  Hughes uses a short arm action with arm speed.  He pitches with low effort and should gain velocity pretty steady.  He's also another pitcher who could make a jump in velocity quickly with a few minor adjustments.

David Vanuelos had a good game for the Red team.  He went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, 2 runs, and an RBI.  He showed bat speed and a nice swing.  He was good behind the plate receiving and catching and throwing.  He made consistent online throws with a best game pop of 2.08.
