2012 RHP Brooks Kriske (La Quinta, CA) was up to 90 mph in his one inning of work but was touched up for one run. Southern Cal commit Vahn Bozoian (Chino Hills, CA) ripped a doubled down the line and then was driven in on a line shot single by San Diego State commit Ty France (West Covina, CA).

2012 Rio Ruiz (Covina,CA) continues to show why he is considered one of the top 2-way prospects in the 2012 class as he worked a quick 1, 2, 3 inning with his fastball sitting 89-91 mph. 2013 RHP/IF Andrew Church has also impressed both ways this weekend and put a good swing on a line out to centerfield off of a 91 mph fastball.  2012 LHP Kyle Twomey (El Dorado, CA) impressed once again with his loose, easy arm action and a fastball that jumps at hitters.
1/17/2011 11:31:53 AM

2013 Dominic Smith (Los Angeles, CA) who has really impressed this weekend with his lefthanded bat and defensive skills in the outfield and at 1B, was also up to 86 mph from the leftside today.
1/17/2011 11:23:31 AM

Rio Ruiz (Covina, CA, Bishop Amat HS) was very impressive in a quick workout before the game today. He threw bullets from the outfield that were gunned at 90 mph and then also looked very good in the infield. His BP was very impressive as he sprayed hard line drives to both gaps, but he saved his best for last as on his last a swing he launched a long HR.
1/17/2011 11:14:50 AM

2012 Henry Omana (Walnut, CA, Diamond Bar HS) started the top prospect game and worked a quick 2 innings with his fastball topping out at 90 mph. Tanner Rahier continued his hot hitting ripping a single off Omana in the first.

Three California Underclass Records were broken in the workout this weekend in San Bernardino. 2012 Tanner Rahier (Indian Wells, CA) set the infield velocity record with a throw of 93 mph across the diamond. He broke Joey Gallo's record set last year with a throw of 91 mph. CJ Saylor (West Covina, CA) is a very impressive all around catcher and broke his own catching velocity record from last year with a throw of 85 mph. He also broke Cameron Garfield's record in the pop time being timed at 1.75 topping Garfield's 2008 time by .01!

Justin Garza(2012 - Ontario, CA) touched 89 MPH on the mound while sitting at 84-88 MPH with his fastball.  He uses a long arm action with good arm speed.  Garza's arm is loose and he gets occasional hard sink on his fastball.  He also throws an 11/5 slurve at 74 MPH and a change-up at 77 MPH.  He throws his slurve for strikes and has feel for it.

RJ Ybarra(2012 - Riverside, CA) had a very good game at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double.  He's got strength in his swing and has bat speed.  Ybarra has a good path to the baseball and the ball jumps off his bat some.  He was also up to 86 MPH on the mound with his fastball.

Andrew Church(2012 - Las Vegas, NV) went 2 for 3 for the Red team.  He showed a good swing path to the baseball with some bat speed.  Church also showed nice actions and arm strength defensively.

1/16/2011 1:42:26 PM

Nick Hynes(2012 - Covina, CA) had a big game for the Navy team.  He went 3 for 4 at the plate and was a home run short of the cycle.  He showed a good approach at the plate and hammered a couple balls to the gaps.  Hynes showed good strength in his swing with some pop.  He's a big strong kid who is a solid two-way prospect.

Josh Heinz(2012 - Stevenson Ranch, CA) looked good at the plate as well.  He was unable to make the workout yesterday, so he took his round of BP before the game.  Heinz showed good bat speed with solid pullside contact.  He consistently squared the ball up in BP and also made good game contact.  The ball jumps off his bat some and he has some pop.

Lefties Max Engelbrekt(2012 - Seattle, WA) and Will Ballowe(2012 - Danville, CA) both looked good today.  Engelbrekt is a lanky 6-4/190 lb. with a projectable pitchers frame.  He pitches with a long arm action and some arm speed.  He uses a full back turn right when he gets to the balance point which adds deception to his delivery.  The ball comes out of his hand clean and his arm works well.  Engelbrekt also throws a sinking change-up at 75 MPH and also a 2/8 slider at 75 MPH.

Ballowe is another big bodied lefty at 6-5/230 lbs.  He is more of an inline delivery styled pitcher and pitches with low effort.  He has arm speed to go with a loose arm action.  Ballowe maintains good balance through his delivery and gets good down plane on his fastball.  He works quick on the mound and stays tall well in his delivery.  Ballowe also throws a 1/7 curve ball at 74 MPH and also throws more of a straight change at 74 MPH.  He gets good downer action on his curve ball.

Devin Carter(2012 - Temecula, CA) touched 88 MPH with his fastball and sat at 85-87 MPH.  He has a quick arm action and his arm works.  Carter works very fast on the mound and is around the plate.  He throws curveball on both an 11/5 and a 10/4 plane.  It has tight spin and he showed the ability to make it sweep or get downer action on it.  His curveball is a good pitch!  Carter gets sink on his fastball and his velocity projects some.
1/15/2011 9:33:27 PM

Kevin Lillicrop(2013 - Cypress, CA) touched 85 MPH in his outing for the Gray team.  The right hander uses a long loose arm action with arm speed.  He pitches with some effort and the ball comes out of his hand clean.  He pitches down hill and also throws an 11/5 CB at 71 and a straight change at 73 MPH.  His curveball shows promise and occasionally gets good bite to it.
1/15/2011 9:29:18 PM

CJ Saylor(2012 - West Covina, CA) led off the top of the 5th inning with a double.  The San Diego State commit dropped the barrel on an inside fastball and laced it to left center field.  He showed a good swing path and good bat speed.  He can really hit!
1/15/2011 9:10:51 PM

Kyle Twomey(2012 - Placentia, CA) is a slender projectable 6-3/155 lb. left hander.  The USC commit pitches with a loose arm action with good arm speed.  The ball really jumps out of his hand and the velocity really projects!  He sat at 87-88 MPH with his fastball and he gets good down plane on it.  Twomey showed a good feel for curveball at 69 MPH and a change up at 72 MPH.  He is a very interesting pitching prospect who should be followed closely!
1/15/2011 8:36:55 PM

Andrew Church(2013 - Las Vegas, NV) and Brooks Kriske(2012 - La Quinta, CA) both pitched well and both were in the upper 80's in game two of the California Underclass Showcase.  Church pitched first and sat in the 84-87 MPH range over his 4 innings of work.  He uses a long arm action with good arm speed.  The ball comes out of his hand clean and his arm works well.  Church is aggressive in the strike zone with his fastball and his fastball gets some down plane action on it.  He also throws a sharp slider at 75 MPH and a sinking CH at 77 MPH.  Church showed pitchability. 2012 Grayson Pratt (Albuquerque, NM) was also up to 86 mph for Crimson.

Kriske followed Church in the rotation and sat at 85-88 MPH with his fastball while touching 89 MPH.  He uses a medium length arm circle in back and his arm works.  Kriske has a loose arm with good arm speed.  He has a good lean build and his body projects.  Kriske throws a sweeping 10/4 curveball at 72 MPH and a fading change up at 75 MPH.  Kriske and Church are both good follows!

Dominic Smith(2013 - Los Angeles, CA), Andrew Pullin(2012 - Centralia, WA) and Jacob Gatewood(2014 - Visalia, CA) all swung the bat well in this game.  Smith is an athletic 6-0/195 lb. 1B/OF with some present strength.  He uses a hand hitch load and generates good bat speed.  Smith has good hitting tools that project.  Pullin generates good bat speed in his swing and the ball jumps.  On his single, the ball exited his bat at 96 MPH!  Gatewood uses a pull approach at the plate and generates good bat speed.  He's a young player being a 2014 and shows promising hitting tools.
1/15/2011 5:53:34 PM

Tanner Rahier(2012 - Indian Wells, CA) continued his impressive day with a great all around game.  Rahier was playing short stop and there was a hard hit ground ball hit in the hole.  He went deep in the hole to get the ball and quickly turned and threw an absolute laser to first base to nail the runner in plenty of time.  It was one of those plays that make you say "WOW!"  He also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple, run, and stolen base.  Rahier showed good hitting tools and instincts at the plate to go with his good bat speed.  He also cruised in his 2 innings of work on the mound working steady at 88-90 MPH with his fastball and touched 91 a handful of times.  He also showed a sharp breaking curve ball at 75 MPH.  He's a legit two-way prospect and is verbally committed to the University of San Diego.

Nick Hynes(2012 - Covina, CA) pitched well for the Navy team.  He sat at 84-86 MPH with his fastball and touched 88 MPH.  He's a tall strong kid at 6-4/220 lbs.  Hynes uses a near full back turn at balance point which helps him hide the ball.  His arm works and he has some arm speed.  Hynes could make a jump in velocity quickly with a few adjustments in his delivery.  He should be followed closely!

Dustin Hughes(2013 - San Diego, CA) also had a good game.  He went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and 3 RBI.  He swings on a flat path and made good contact.  He also pitched and touched 86 MPH with his fastball.  Hughes uses a short arm action with arm speed.  He pitches with low effort and should gain velocity pretty steady.  He's also another pitcher who could make a jump in velocity quickly with a few minor adjustments.

David Vanuelos had a good game for the Red team.  He went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, 2 runs, and an RBI.  He showed bat speed and a nice swing.  He was good behind the plate receiving and catching and throwing.  He made consistent online throws with a best game pop of 2.08.
1/15/2011 2:40:20 PM

Tanner Rahier(2012 - Indian Wells, CA) generates very good bat speed and is strong at contact.  The ball jumps off his bat and he looks to drive the ball.  He made solid pullside contact in his BP round and his hitting tools really project.

Dominic Smith(2013 - Los Angeles, CA) starts with a very open stance and uses a big foot lift trigger to start his swing.  He's got quick hands and generates bat speed.  Smith swings on a line drive path and the ball comes off his bat well.  His hitting tools project well.

Andrew Pullin(2012 - Centralia, WA) has a relaxed approach and maintains good balance through his swing.  He swings on a line drive path and made hard pullside contact.  Pullin showed some pop and his hitting tools project.
