2016 Super Regional Preview

Starkville Super Regional

Bobby Dalbec had a huge day on the mound for Arizona in their 1-0 win over Mississippi State on Friday, nearly pitching a complete game shutout but instead settling for the win with 8 2/3 scoreless innings. Dalbec out-dueled Bulldogs’ ace Dakota Hudson – who also pitched well over 6 1/3 innings – scattering five hits and two walks while striking out nine to move to 10-4 on the season.

J.J. Matijevic got to Hudson in the sixth, hitting an opposite-field double that scored Ryan Aguilar, the game’s only run. The two teams combined for only 12 base hits in the game in a relatively clean, well-played contest.

Coral Gables Super Regional

Miami was the only home team to pull out a win on Friday, and even they had to sweat things out after Boston College scored four runs in the top of the ninth to make a fairly one-sided game respectable as the Hurricanes won 12-7. Zack Collins did his thing, going 1-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and two driven in. His three-run home run in the third (as part of a four-run frame) gave Miami a lead they would never relinquish.

Second baseman Johnny Ruiz also enjoyed a huge day, going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs. Michael Mediavilla gave up three runs (two earned) on four base hits and three walks while striking out seven that allowed him to move to 11-1 on the year. Justin Dunn, the 19th overall pick on the first day of the draft on Thursday, got roughed up, allowing five runs (all earned) in 5 1/3.

Lubbock Super Regional

Atlhough a Tyler Neslony three-run home run in the seventh inning pulled Texas Tech within two of visiting East Carolina the Pirates’ bullpen shut down the Red Raiders the rest of the way in an 8-6 win. ECU ace Evan Kruczysnki pitched well enough for the win, but it was Matt Bridges who shut things down after Neslony’s home run, providing 2 2/3 innings in which he struck out six while facing the minimum.

East Carolina Catcher Travis Watkins, who is enjoying a very productive postseason, went 3-for-5 in the game with a pair of runs scored and six RBI. Two of his hits were home runs, and he hit them in back-to-back innings; a grand slam in the fifth and a two-run shot in the sixth.

College Station Super Regional

The TCU bats got to Texas A&M’s Brigham Hill, who gutted through 4 2/3 innings before giving way to the Aggies bullpen. The Horned Frogs scored two in the first, three in the third and three more in the fifth before chasing Hill from the game (who allowed eight runs on six base hits and four walks). TCU’s Nos. 2-4 hitters – Cam Warner, Evan Skoug and Luken Baker – each went 2-for-4 in the game, and Baker provided the biggest blast, a three-run home run (his ninth of the year) in the third that broke a 2-2 tie and propelled TCU to an 8-2 win.

Jared Jaczak gave the Horned Frogs 7 2/3 strong innings to move to 7-3 on the year and Ryan Burnett tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the victory.
